Daily Requirements:

Students need to bring the following to reading lab each day: a notebook, a pen or pencil, and their planners. Literature texts will be used several times per week and often, daily. These will be used only in the classroom and will not be checked out for student use.

Grading:

Reading lab uses the grading scale printed in the student planner. All points have the same weight.

Students will earn credit reading word lists aloud to the instructor, taking quizzes and tests based on the daily readings, and participating in class. The tests will be collaborative, based on shared student interest and meaning taken from the readings. Quizzes will be based on comprehension and interpretation of readings. Students will also earn credit reading a book that they select each semester. This class is not designed to be a “homework class” or a “study for the test class” per se, since all students are already enrolled in freshman, sophomore, or junior English. So, while students may spend a few minutes each week brushing up on word list pronunciations, they should not spend more than 10 to 15 minutes a week on any work in Reading laboratory class.

Should students need individual help after school, I will be in Room 127 each afternoon Monday through Thursday until 5:30pm. Students are also encouraged to make use of late-start Wednesdays and after school study programs as needed.

Classroom Rules:

Former and present JeffersonWestHigh School students have created a very pleasant school environment. Most Jeff West students are respectful and hard working. And since fewer than 10 students are enrolled in reading laboratory, misbehavior is rare. However, in the event that students misbehave, the LADDS discipline strategy adopted by USD 340 and described in the handbook will be enforced. Students will not be allowed to interfere in the learning of others.Prohibited items (hats, cell phones, CD players, etc.) will be confiscated until the end of the hour and a detention will be assigned. All detentions will be served with me after school.

Communication:

Grades and assignment descriptions can be accessed from the Power school website, which I update each Thursday. I also encourage calls, emails or visits from parents and students at the times listed at the top of the syllabus.
