Jefferson Varsity Game Updates
2013 Season

April 26, 2013

After seven weeks in a gym, Jefferson softball finally gets to play our first game besting Prior Lake 4-1. High lights include Claire Woebke’s 2 great catches in right field and on one of those catches, doubling up the runner at first to end the inning, saving a possible run from scoring at third. Claire also went two for three with a triple, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI’s. Also multi hit players included Kate Deming who was 2-4 with a triple, and Emily Carr who went 2-3 with a double, 1 run scored and an RBI. Hannah Evavold gets the win giving up 7 hits and 6 K’s. Scoring winning run was Claire Woebke, winning RBI was off the bat of Kate Deming.

Player of the game was Claire Woebke.

Monday April 29 at Eastview. Our game vs Eastview had all the earmarks of a pitching duel between Hannah Evavold (Jefferson) and Kerrigan Hoshaw (Eastview). We scored first in the second inning on a walk to Hannah, sac bunt by Krista Flugstad, and A well timed single by Lauren Gustafson. That turned out to be the only run we were able to get off of Kerrigan. I thought it might be enough but in the fifth inning, a throwing error and 2 singles created an unearned run for Eastview. Hannah sustained a head injury while trying to catch a pop foul ball behind first base. Alex O’Connor pitched 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief while giving up only 1 hit striking out 3. But then in the bottom of the 11th inning, the leadoff batter, Marissa Leners of Eastview, with a 2-1 count – went yard on us and it was over. While we missed numerous chances to get the winning run in 7 innings, it was a well played game, with lots of tension screaming and hollering. I think that is why we show up at the field every day – to see what could be!

Jefferson – 1 run, 4 hits, and 1 error

Eastview – 2 runs, 6 hits, and 1error

Jefferson record 1-1

Tonight was a strange night. If I was to tell you our team scored 13 runs on 18 hits, Bailey Plaman 1st base, had a Homerun and a double, and Krista Flugstad, 3rd base was 4 for 5 with a run scored and 6 RBI’s- you would probably think we won. Wrong – we lost 14-13. That is a very unusual score for a South Suburban softball game. Leading hitters for Jefferson also included left fielder Lauren Gustafson (3 for 5 ), shortstop Karmann Carroll (3 for 4 & 3 runs scored) and center fielder Kate Deming (3 for 5, 2 runs & 2 RBI’s). The second game was more like what was expected in the first game- low scoring with great defense and superb pitching. Cassie Santiago pitched a complete game jewel, giving up 6 hits and 2 runs. She struck out six and only walked one. Claire Woebke moved from right field to catcher in both games. Kate Deming was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s and Lauren Gustafson was 2 for 3 with a run scored. Kendal Fasching, walked and eventually scored the winning run. Final score was Jefferson 3 Eagan 2.

We look forward to the return in the near future of Hannah Evavold who was injured in the game on Tuesday at Eastview, Emily Carr, and Kylie Macziewski.

Jefferson’s record now stands at 2-2. We play tomorrow at Rosemount and Friday at Burnsville. Saturday we play in the Eastview tournament (3 Games).

Winter returned again today, May 3, 2013 and all levels of Jefferson Softball were thought to have been canceled. But wait – this isn’t 1965, it is 2013 and we have Domes to play softball in and they should be used. So when we were summoned to the West St. Paul Sports Complex, we brought many bats, gloves, and the desire to win a ball game and so we entered the” DOME”. We met up with Burnsville at 4:05 PM and after agreeing to in house rules (DOME RULES), we were ready to battle – but only to 6:15PM (DOME RULES).

Balls bounced off the ceiling, hit lights hanging from the ceiling, and went under fences in the outfield. But we prevailed and won the contest 7-4 running our record to 3-2. That’s right, after 8 weeks, we have finally played five games – our only loses were both by 1 run.

In this game, 7 different players scored a run, five different players had at least 1 RBI, and 5 players had multi hits. Leaders in hitting included Lauren Gustafson who went 3 for 4 including a double, a run scored and an RBI. Cassie Santiago was 3-4 with a double, a run scored and 1 RBI. Emily Carr was 2 for 3 with a double, 1 run scored and 1 RBI. Krista Flugstad was 2 for 3, 1 walk, and 1 RBI. Bailey Plaman was 2 for 4 with a run scored and 2 RBI’s. Cassie Santiago scored what turned out to be the winning run on a double by Bailey Plaman. Cassie got on base when she laid down a perfect suicide squeeze scoring Lauren Gustafson from third. Alex O’Connor was the winning pitcher with Cassie Santiago pitching the final 2 innings. This was truly a team win.

Next up is Lakeville North on Monday, May 6 at Dred Scott, Tuesday we are at Minnetonka (double header ), Wednesday home vs. Apple Valley and Rosemount, and Thursday a double header with Bloomington Kennedy. We are trying to add Hopkins on Monday and Eden Prairie on Tuesday, if Minnetonka chooses to not play 2 games with us. On Monday May 13, we are scheduled to play Lakeville South at home, and travel to Edina on Tuesday. May 15 is the start of section play. Watch for updates.

Hi ALL,

Jefferson is back on the winning way – tonight we won two games at Minnetonka. In the first game, Alex O’Connor pitched a three hit, one run gem striking out 5 and not walking a batter. Jefferson scored 11 runs to coast to a six inning win. The mercy rule was in effect. Score Jefferson 11 Minnetonka 1.

Kate Deming was 3 for 5, scored 2 runs, 1RBI, and added a stolen base

Lauren Gustafson was 2 for 4

Kylie Macziewski was 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI’s

Claire Woebke was 2 for 4 with a double and 2RBI’s

Karmann Carroll was 2 for 3 with a triple and 2 RBI’s

BEST OF ALL – EVERY starter had at least 1 hit MAKING THIS A TRUE TEAM EFFORT.

In the second game, it was Wile E. Coyote time (you girls can google that) -- on the base paths, but another pitching gem by Krista Flugstad stopped Minnetonka. Krista gave up only 4 hits, 0 walks while striking out 7. Bailey Plaman, Lauren Gustafson, Krista Flugstad, and Michaela Schmidt had 2 hits each. Bailey and Michaela each had a stolen base. Kendal Fasching, who was pinch running for Lauren Gustafson, scored from second on a single by Krista Flugstad for the go ahead run, and then Bailey Plaman scored the third run on a hit by Linnea Carlyle. Score Jefferson 3 Minnetonka 1. Jefferson’s record improves to 5-3 overall and 3-3 conference. Next up is a double header tomorrow at Dred Scott. We play Apple Valley first at 4:15 and then Rosemount around 6:30. Thursday, May 9, we play a double with Kennedy at Dred Scott which is BFA Night. The 9A team will play a 7 inning game, and the JV team will play 2 five inning games. Good Luck to all.

Hey Jaguar softball fans, we finally played our 10th game of the season as the 9th week of the season is about to end. Tonight was the second of three double headers in 3 days.

We started out strong hosting Apple Valley at Dred Scott for a 4:15 game with Alex O’Connor in the circle. She pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up 2 earned runs, 6 hits, 1 walk, while striking out 8 Eagle Batters. Six Jaguar batters had multi hits in this game.

Lauren Gustafson was 2 for 4 with two runs scored

Bailey Plaman was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI’s

Krista Flugstad was 2 for 4

Kylie Macziewski was 3 for 4with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI’s

Michaela Schmidt was also 2 for 4

The BIG BLAST of the night was from Cassie “I’m going yard” Santiago and she did. Cassie was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored, the homer, a walk and 2 RBI’s.

Line score was: Jefferson 9-15-3

Apple Valley 2-6-2

As the rain arrived around 6:30, so did Rosemount and we started our second game of the night. Rosemount had just defeated Kennedy at Kelly Field and we thought the long ride might have worn them out, but it wasn’t to be. Rosemount scored single runs in the first, second, third and fourth innings and defeated Jefferson 4-0. Our girls lost focus both defensively and on offense as they were only able to come up with 2 hits – one each from Emily Carr (catcher), and Krista Flugstad (Pitcher). We committed 5 errors and were back on our heels throughout the game. Our record is now 6-4 overall, 3-4 conference.

Line score Jefferson 0-2-5

Rosemount 4-6-1

Thursday night we will play 2 against Kennedy at Dred Scott on BFA night. Hope to see you all there.

Tonight the Bloomington Jefferson Softball team hosted a twin bill with cross town rival Kennedy High school. The park was in remarkable condition considering the rain and wind that made the whole day unbearable. Kennedy scored their first and only run in the top of the second, but by the end of the inning, Jefferson was ahead 4-1. Jefferson scored one more in the third, four in the fifth, and three in the sixth and it was time to start a new game. Six Jefferson players had at least 2 hits each, and Cassie Santiago and Kylie Macziewski each had a moon shot. Kate Deming and Kylie had 3 RBI’s and Cassie had 4. Other multi hitters included Kate Deming, Bailey Plaman, Emily “you’re not stealing on me” Carr, and Krista Flugstad.

Cassie Santiago pitched a complete game giving up just 6 hits, 1 unearned run, 1 base on balls and 4 K’s.

Line score Kennedy 1 – 5 – 4

Jefferson 12 – 13 -2

In the second game of the twin bill, Kennedy was the Home Team. The weather had made the day fit more for ice fishing than Softball but everyone hung in there – I did see a few sneak off to a car heater or two.

In the second game, Jefferson got off to a fast start scoring 4 runs in the first inning and 8 in the third. Kennedy countered with one in the second. Jefferson scored two more in the fifth and it was a race to the fireplace at home.

In this game, 9 Jefferson hitters had multiple hits. Among the leading hitters, Linnea Carlyle was 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored, a double, triple, and 3 RBI’s. Other RBI leaders included Emily Carr with 2, Lauren Gustafson with 3, and Cassie Santiago with 3.

Linnea started the game on the mound, and pitched 2 innings, and Alex O’Connor pitched the rest of the game for the win. Alex did not give up a hit and had 5 K’s.

Our record improved to 8-4 after going 5-1 in last 3 days.

Up next, at home vs. Lakeville South on Monday, and at Edina Tuesday. The conference and section seeding meeting is also on Monday Night, May 13. Section games start Wednesday, May 15 and double elimination starts Friday, May 17 with final 8 teams.

Bloomington Jefferson Softball moved their record to 9-4 overall and 5-4 in conference with a 6-2 win over Lakeville South. It was senior night, and we gave them a victory so they can tell all the grandkids some day. Especially Cassie Santiago’s BOMB to the street with Natalie Schmidt aboard running for Krista Flugstad who had singled. Earlier in the game, Emily Carr hit a dinger with Michaela Schmidt on base. Yes the Schmidt’s are sisters. Emily earlier in the night said she was going to hit one out tonight and I told her I hope you get a single. In the first inning, Kate Deming scored from third on a pass ball. Michaela Schmidt scored from third in the 5th inning on a ground to short.

I explained how important this game could be at the Section seeding meeting following the game and it turned out it was VERY important as we were seeded third instead of a possible 4th or fifth seed.

Jefferson plays Edina tomorrow in a nonconference game and has a bye in sections on Wednesday. We will play Friday in the second round against the winner of Wednesday’s game matching Henry Sibley at host Eagan.

Come out to Dred Scott and support the Sections which has moved to Bloomington for the first time.

Today Bloomington Jefferson Softball completed the regular season with a win at Edina. The snow, rain, and wind caused many problems for scheduling games and outdoor practices. This year we only were able to play 14 games rather than the normal 20 games. Today the chocolate bars were melting as fast as girls were. We won this night 13-2 in 6 innings and improved our overall record to 10-4 (5-4 conference). The Jags knocked out 16 hits, including the round tripper by Bailey Plaman in the 6th inning with Lauren Gustafson on base. Bailey finished the game going 3-3 with 2 runs scored and 5 RBI’s. Other multi hits players included Kate Deming who was 3-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI. Cassie Santiago was 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored, a triple and 2 RBI’s. Karmann Carroll and Krista Flugstad had 2 hits each, and Kylie Macziewski had 3 RBI’s. Cassie Santiago started the game in the circle, giving up 2 hits, one earned run and striking out 2. She got the win running her record to 3-0 and 2 saves. Alex O’Connor pitched the final 3 innings giving up 3 hits, 1 earned run and striking out 2.

After 14 games are team stats are looking very good offensively. Team batting average is.378, on base percentage is.422, slugging % is .531.

Those with at least 20 at bats hitting above .400 include Kate Deming (.412), Bailey Plaman (.405), Krista Flugstad (.438), Emily Carr (.424), and Kylie Macziewski (.476). Cassie Santiago is at .386 and Lauren Gustafson is at .373.

Moving to the Sections though we need to do a better job stopping our opponent’s bats. They are hitting at a .353 clip. We also need to tighten up the defense – we have committed 30 errors in 14 games. Today vs. Edina we had our first errorless game this season.

If we cleanup our defense and continue to hit as we have, we surely will fulfill our stated goal – THIRD TIME’S A CHARM.

I predict that before the season is over around June 7th, Jefferson Softball will play a game on a sunny 70 degree day with the wind out of the south at 6MPH. Tonight in round 2 of the Section 3AAA Softball playoff Jefferson played Eagan. Cassie Santiago was in the circle hoping to get her fourth win, and she did with 7th inning help from Alex O’Connor who came in to get the last out. Jefferson won 5-3, with all 3 runs for Eagan coming in the 7th inning.

Leaders offensively for Jefferson included Michaela Schmidt (right field), who was 2-2. Linnea Carlyle (first base), was 2 for 3 with a run scored. Big hitter for the night was Krista Flugstad who went 2-3 with a double and a 4 bagger Souvenir out of the yard in the 4th inning. Then something that we will talk about for a long time occurred. Hannah Evavold stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning. She had suffered a concussion on April 29th vs Eastview, when she decided to see if running into a fence would hurt – it did and she has been out of action since that day. Well, she stepped in, took a couple of pitches, and then sent the ball for a moon walk over the right centerfield fence with a runner aboard. Frankly I was hoping for a solid single, but two runs are better than one.

For Jefferson: 5-10-2

For Eagan 3-9-0

Thursday we play Rosemount in the third round of the winners bracket. Game time 6PM on field 2 at DRED SCOTT FIELDS.

Finally played with sun sparkling today. In the third round of the Section 3AAA Softball Playoffs, Bloomington Jefferson defeated Rosemount 2-1 in 8 innings. While Alex O’Connor was pitching a gem, our bats were over at Starbucks looking for some caffeine. Rosemount scored first in the third inning on a walk and a double. That was all Rosemount needed until a defibrillator over at the coffee shop was used in place of the caffeine and our bats came to life. In the seventh, Alex faced 3 Irish batters getting 3 quick outs. Move to the bottom of the seventh and our first hitter Cassie Santiago drilled a triple down the right field line. Kylie Macziewski followed with a single scoring Cassie and it was a new game. Even though 6 batters came to the plate, we were unable put the game away and we all moved to the eighth inning. Rosemount moved a runner to third but Alex again closed the door with her pitching and 3 straight infield outs. In the bottom of the eighth, Kate Deming high tailed it to first base when their shortstop bobbled the ball and Kate outran the throw to first. Emily Carr singled, next Cassie Santiago also singled and then Kylie Macziewski drilled a single to the outfield and the celebration was on.
