Jay Humphreys Bio
Jay Humpreys lives in Tucson Az. At her heart of hearts she is a lover
of clay and the deep connection to this element of nature has always
been an integral part of her soul. The push and pull, the rapid method
of application of texture to clay and it yielding to her visions; gives
her great satisfaction. Living close to nature has given her a deep
enduring love of all things in nature. The desire to have these lines
and patterns rendered in precious metals has led her on a quest. While
studying traditional metal fabrication, she was introduced to PMC in
1996. Metal Clay fulfilled her inner being and has become an
all-consuming love.
By nature she is an explorer. She always needs to know the what and how
of everything. Her degrees are first in microbiology and then in
business. These gave her the necessary tools for the development and
marketing skills for a new form of metal clay, “Metal Clay Veneer”.
Jay has developed a solution which when combined with any of the metal
clays makes a veneer paste. This paste is applied to a textured
substrate. After drying it forms a flexible, textured, nondrying veneer
sheet. She has spent the lst few years developing this product and
exploring the endless ways metal clay veneer can be used in conjunction
with varied art media. It is difficult to grasp a sheet of pure silver
that is soft as fabric and textured! The metal clay veneer sheet can
easily be added to give texture to other metal clay items and fired with
them as one unit. After being fired at 1650 degrees for 2 hours it can
be used in conjunction with glass, china, pottery, wood, polymer clay,
sterling, and other metals. The fired sheet is very malleable and
strong. It can be bent around unusual shaped objects. The fired sheet
makes the lightest earrings ever; large size takes on new dimension. The
paste is applied to textured substrates. This imparts the texture as the
paste dries. These substrates can be simple leafs from your garden to
your own original unique design carved in wax or polymer clay. No limit
to the creativity of your own individuality.
Jay loves to teach and introduce this exciting new horizon of metal clay
and its many uses in all media. A certified PMC instructor and Metal
Clay artesian, she teaches workshops and classes from her studio in her
home as will in various venues. She has been a presenter at both the PMC
conference and at the first Metal Clay World Conference. She is a juried
member of the Arizona Designer Craftsmen, certified instructor for Rio
Grande, member of the PMC Guild and the Southern Arizona Alchemists. Her
work has been included in the Studio PMC, fusion 2001, Shemer Museum,
and the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show. The last year has been spent
writing the book, “the Techniques of Metal Clay Veneer”.
