Participants are required to bring a sample of a 250 g paddy rice that is of known quality.

The trainer must be able to direct the participants to:

1.Perform quality tests on samples of paddy rice.

2.Record the results of the activity as provided in the form.

3.Discuss the results of the activity. During the discussion, the trainer may provide the known ‘quality’ characteristic of paddy rice to make a compare them with the output of the participants.

Lesson 2

/ How do you measure the moisture content of paddy rice?

This lesson will discuss in detail the optimal moisture content of paddy rice for milling.

Outcome

At the end of this lesson, each participant will be able to identify and describe the optimal moisture content of paddy rice for milling, as well as measure the moisture content of paddy rice in two days.

Materials

Participants are required to bring a sample of a 500 g paddy rice. They are also required to bring petri dishes, a weighing scale, an oven, and at least one type of a moisture content tester.

/ This lesson must be organized as a lecture and a discussion activity.

The trainer must be able to:

1.Give a brief discussion on the importance of moisture content.

2.Provide an overview of the processes in measuring moisture content.

3.Conduct a practical exercise to let the participants measure the moisture content of sample paddy rice using the oven drying method and the electronic moisture tester.

Note: The participants will perform the oven method and may return after 24 hours to get the result.

The trainer will observe the participants conduct the activity and see if they perform the tests correctly. At the end of the session, the trainer will ask the participants some questions on the importance of measuring the moisture content of paddy rice and how to measure it.

Lesson 3

/ How do you measure grain dimension and 1000-grain weight to test the varietal purity of paddy rice?

Methodology

This lesson will discuss in detail the importance of varietal purity, as well as its measure using grain dimension. It will also give a review on the procedures of measuring grain through trainer supervision of activity and calculation of L-W ratio after completing the information required from the table.

At the end of this lesson, each participant will be able to calculate the L-W ratio from the samples of paddy rice.

Participants are required to bring samples paddy rice. They are also required to bring Vernier calipers to measure the length and width of grains, as well as a copy of the worksheet taken from the lesson notes.

The trainer must be able to:

1.Ensure that each participant brings the necessary materials.

2.Discuss briefly varietal purity, and the use of L-W ratio as a measure.

4.Instruct the participants to select and measure 20 grains and record the measurements.

5.Demonstrate how to calculate the L-W ratio and let the participants complete the calculation of data from the table.

At the end of this lesson, each participant will be able to gain knowledge of impurities present in paddy rice and at the same time, measure the amount of dockage.

Participants are required to bring a sample of a 100 g paddy rice. They will also use a scale to measure the 100-grain sample of paddy rice and a clear surface to place and sort the rice grains.
