Student Learning Outcomes

Students should be able to word process at a minimum skill of 25 net words-a-minute (nwam) by the end of the first semester. It is expected that when students are given a business problem or situation they will be able to choose an appropriate computer application and create a document or report from available data. Each student is responsible for creating his/her own home page and encouraged to create one for a teacher (required for an A).

Grading Policy

Grades are based on quantity and quality of computer work completed. All work submitted must be error free. The higher grades require greater volumes of work. Designing a Web Site for one of your teachers and approved by that teacher upon completion will be required for an “A.”

Homework Policy

All work is done in the computer lab. If students want to practice, the lab is open before and after school on Tuesday and Thursday. Homework is very limited.

Materials / Supplies / Textbook Policy

The only materials needed are a pen, paper, and a 3-ring binder to keep handouts. The textbooks are MS Office 2000 Introductory Course by South-Western publishing and the Macromedia text Digital Design by Thomson publishing. Books stay in the lab.

Make-up Policy

Make-up is always available for excused absences. Please be sure to communicate about sickness or extended leaves. Work not turned in will result in lower grades.

Extra Credit Policy

Extra credit is available on request for special circumstances. The business department encourages individual reading of business related books. A book list is available and extra credit is given for written book reports.

Citizenship Expectations

I expect each student to be in class with a positive mental attitude ready for the activities of the class. The tardy policy of James Madison High School is enforced in all business courses. Please read the Tardy and Truancy Sweeps Policy as written in the James Madison High School Discipline Policy Manual. Attitude is everything! Keep yours positive.

Citizenship Grade

E Excellent On task, assists others, a true asset to the class

G Good On task, non disruptive to class, 1-2 tardies

S Satisfactory Needs a push to get going and to keep on task, 3rd tardy

N Needs Improvement Usually not on task, disruptive, 4th tardy

U Unsatisfactory A disruptive influence on the class and/or attendance problems, 5 or more tardies

In Addition

·  One truancy or unexcused absence will reduce your citizenship grade to a U for that six-week grading period.

·  Three or more truancies or unexcused absences will result in a U in citizenship grade for the semester.

·  Final semester grade will be the average of the three six week grading periods.

·  Cheating will produce an automatic “U” in citizenship and an “F” in the course.

General Policies and Procedures

·  Class Dismissal is done by the instructor not the bell. Please remain in your seat until the instructor dismisses you.

·  Passes are to be issued on an as needed basis, with 5 minutes between classes there should be plenty of time to use the facilities.

·  Personal Hygiene: As the name indicates, this should be done privately. Ladies, please no make-up in this class, and both ladies and gentlemen, please do not brush hair in class.

·  Respect for Computer Lab and Equipment: There is no food, drink, or electronic devices allowed in the lab. Any student defacing any equipment or materials can be suspended, dropped from class, and /or parents may be responsible for the cost of repairs/replacement.

Computer Lab

Please respect the lab, equipment, and each other. NO food or drinks at any workstation. This course is very research driven…reading for information and performing projects based on the instructions given. Each student will receive a unique four digit User ID and will create his/her own password. The first time you logon your password is "password" (without the " " marks). The class should be fun and rewarding for all. Always your choice!
