  1. O-Week Debriefing
  2. Internals

we have rooms, but all over campus, so have walking party before the topic release

Melv v MCC debate x 2 as the briefing room: Melv is larger, but further from other rooms

  1. Pro-Am

Venue: HW Arndt

Second year novices will be pros if not enough pros

  1. Easters trials

Pro trial: CV or debate

Dom: prefer debate trials but depends on the person  Bec: Goldie will judge the trial and judge the CV

Goldie: CV gives more information – people should choose what is fair; Bec: inclined for CV trials

Dom: blind marking CV from an external person, can offer to find a Monash and has a high chance to get them; Bec: someone without knowledge of our pros may not know the style of how they pro; Goldie: we can do both

Action: Goldie and James (from Monash) will do CV trial

Novice trial: Tuesday after is the Easters trial

Dan Dummer and Jess M or Julia

Novices and pros match: whether best to best or consider more

Bec: do filtering process again, but also do keep secret record of Novice’s improvements

Goldie: topics were not well written or balanced

Adj trial: Bec: watch a video and then fill in who has won. Date is ACTDU Accreditation Day

Second years+ who want to adj competitively will get the priority, and then debaters who do not receive positions give the second priority

James: we can apply for grants for that as well

Dom: training for adjs first years before trial happens; Bec: if we do not have enough people signing up for adj directly, then we can just pass them; but otherwise we can do some administrative management

  1. Easters Vibes

Bec: how many teams should be stacked?

Sharm: randomness other than the stacked teams will not be ideal as people who attend are competitive in the sense they want to rank higher than previously

Dom& Bec: we will take that into consideration. But we will try to frame it in another way so the rest of the teams will not feel left out

Goldie: numbering (i.e. 1-3 & 4-6), hence we do not need to be transparent about the numbering;Bec: ANU 1 has advantage on breaking, and also she found it better to perceive ANU has many teams breaking than only has one team breaking, so less individualism; Dom: give ANU 1 to a numbered ANU 3 and put the strongest as ANU 11; Bec: but it is very likely that ANU 1,2,3 will break like the year before with strong novices but not the best novices and the pros are not good

Goldie: people might drop out as well  offer and acceptance system

(1)Goal at Easters? In order of competitiveness? Or development? Bec: both competitiveness (match a trialled well and competitive novice with a trialled well and competitive pro) and development (match a trialled well but not competitive novice with a trialled well pro) Goldie: the binary may not be necessary

(2)Initial trials: Excel sheet for availability, committee members put down as many availability time slots as possible  pro debaters will adj the trial

(3)Second year novices: Dom – should not prioritise second years because they had the chance to be a pro in their first year; Sharm: but many did not get that chance and good to have a mix; Bec: should not sacrifice retention for developing young talents, because Shell did not come back or stay but she was an outlier, most second years stayed, and we have pros at every level to develop second years;

(4)For retention: Bec: pros should take novices to after-Easters minis (there are three: USU, WSU, UNSW) Dom: external officers can arrange pros to debate with novices and allocate them to externals; Bec: we can also re run ANU Cup

(5)After trial: Bec: at easters, brief Easters pros to not only go and interact with people from other contingents, and ask the pros to introduce novices to their other contingent friends if they want to go and catch up with friends + no pressuring for weed or alcohol; Sharm: put it into equity; Dom: but if we put a fixed number it would be too much pressure; Bec: we can have a ‘start-up’ social

  1. Fall Dates

1 and 2 April: two-day intensive exam, we probably cannot get extension

25-26 March in instead CBE Infrastructure (Julia)

  1. Women

Eli: older womenin the society mentor younger women; she will write conversational starters for awks convos

Women’s social: Jess M offered her house and payment plan for people who cannot afford to go to Australs

  1. First year social

Sharm: make it a later day; Penny: she felt daunted at Pro-Am because she did not know anyone

Gild: Thursday 9 March, pay entry fee

  1. Training weekend

$103-110 pp with $7 pp per meal, but we can cut down costs to $3 pp per meal for brek and lun but $6 for dinner

Dom: BP launch should not be the replacement or collaboration with training weekend

Action: Sharm finds date – 5-6 May

  1. ESL training session

Action: EOI form and find ESL speaker

There might be a sponsorship opportunity

  1. Internal

Action: Toni sends out internal sign up form

  1. Social.debate

Help advertising it as something debaters might be interested in and post on ANU Debating, we might get sponsorship. And we will offer topics

  1. Club and Soc meeting

Someone be there to ask not cut our funding – Bobby is going for the first hour

  1. Australs funding

$250 subsidy for travel costs extrinsic to the subsidy for rego

Everyone voted to pass

  1. Australs registration

Penny: This week starts the registration - The main question is how many teams; Bec: request 8 (the max); 8 teams, 7 adjs and half payment

  1. Easters Rego

$370 this year - $2000 for the year as revenue as the current budget (James). Bec: we can advertise as no subsidy but move onto tell them that we have scholarship funds

Bus from Wollongong to Canberra (James and Penny): $837 = 31 x $27; hire an Orange bus

Bec: $600-$800 contingency scholarship funds; Dom: how is that going to be administered? First years v older years, income standards, family support; merits v need; Sharm: CASS sponsorship violation but not a huge problem + $100 cap otherwise it would be unfair to people who could not go b/cos no money at all; Bec: merits worked efficiently last year

Sharm: easters v Worlds subsidy

Bec: privy hence do not disclose this convo to others

Action: $500 out of Australs and Worlds each to add $1000 to Easters (James/ Bec)

Action: need Monty for sponsorship re bus (James and Monty)
