“Kentucky Cyberhunt” Lesson Plan

Subject: Social Studies

Grade: 4th

Kentucky Content Standards:

SS-04-5.2.1

Objectives:

  • Students will be able to locate important facts about the state of Kentucky using a Yahooligans Web Search.
  • Students will be able to use the information from their “Kentucky Cyberhunt” to make a five-slide presentation on the state of Kentucky.

Materials:

Computer with access to Internet (Yahooligans)

Computer with access to Microsoft PowerPoint

Kentucky State Facts Sheet (pg. 2)

Procedures:

One of the first lessons that need to be covered in order to do this activity is the proper use of a search engine on the Internet. Many students don’t know how to “weed” out the unimportant information when using an Internet search. You need to instruct them about reading each search result and see if it pertains to what they are looking for. When you type in the word Kentucky on an Internet search, there are many things that come up as a result.

After going over this with your students, you can put them on a computer and teach them how to access the search engine “Yahooligans”. When they understand, pass out the “Kentucky Cyberhunt” worksheet and tell them to use the Internet to find their answers. This activity allows them the freedom to use the many different search results to find their answers. You may want your students to work in pairs or have them do it on an individual basis.

After everyone completes their Cyberhunt and have found the answers they think are correct, come back together as a whole group. Go over the answers with the students to make sure everyone has the correct answers. You want to make sure of this before going on to the next step.

With the student’s answers from their Cyberhunt, have the students create a five-slide presentation about the state of Kentucky using PowerPoint. If your students haven’t been exposed to PowerPoint, it would benefit them greatly to do a mini-lesson on the basics of the program. After the students complete their PowerPoint, you can have them present them to the

class.
