Using the NEW Speed Stacking Instructor Guide

Individual, Small or Large Group Stacking Activities

Cup Stack Sequence Sheets---depending on your class/student abilities, you can make a “Cup Stack Sequence” sheet to fit their needs. These are nice for students to practice on their own, then when done, can move to timing mats or other activities.

Examples are shown, but you can make them to fit your class…

Do 3-3-3 Stack 5 times

Do 3-3-3-3 Stack 5 times

Do 6-6- Stack 5 times

Do 3-6-3 Stack 5 times

Roll the Dice---again, can be done individually, with partners or as a large group. Make your “Master Sheet” of stacks and rolls…Students can pair up with sheet and individual dice and work for a certain amount of time, or you can do as a group. *Variation—You can use 2 die, one to determine the “STACK” the other the number of times “STACK” needs to be done.

Examples: Roll a 1….do the 3-3-3 Stack______times Roll a 2…do the 6-6 Stack______times Again, you can fit to your students abilities.

Luck of the Draw---Similar to “Roll the Dice” except you are now using a deck of cards. Make your “Master Sheet”---for example if you draw a KING, do the Cycle Stack_# times, Draw a QUEEN, do the

10 Stack_# times Draw a 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 do the 3-6-3 Stack # times, Draw the JOKER---student choice of stack. Again, you can fit to your students abilities.

Stack for Cash—A variation of “Roll the Dice” and “Luck of the Draw.”

I have pretend money, $1.00, $2.00, $5.00, $10.00, $20.00, $100.00 that I have laminated with numbers 1 through 5 on the back of all the bills. I have also made a “Stack Sheet” for each denomination of bill, with 5 different stacks listed---Example: $1.00 sheet might have 1 listed to do the 3-3 Stack, 2 do the 6 Stack, 3 Cycle….however you would like to create. I post these sheets around the gym, students can work individually or in pairs….place ALL money in center of playing area, face down, only number 1 through 5 showing…students will have their “HOME” stacking spot with cups, on signal…students run to money pile, pick up a bill, see what denomination it is, go check the matching stack sheet and see what stack they need to complete. I go for 2 to 3 minutes, then have students add how much money they have collected during that round…add music, have fun STACKING FOR CASH!!

Ducks in a Pond—Again, similar to “Roll the Dice,” “Luck of the Draw” and “Stack for Cash”---however RUBBER DUCKS are being used. I purchased these ducks for other activities and felt they could be used in our stacking activities. These ducks have numbers on the bottom… 1 through 6….(you can purchase ducks with numbers on them)….these are Alphabet Ducks, and I just put numbers on the bottom. Create a master “DUCKS ON A POND” stack sheet, with numbers 1-6 listed…each number has a designated stack….for example #1 could be 3-6-3 stack,

#2 Rapid Fire, #3 10 stack….again, however you want to create. The sheets could all be the same, or you could change stacks for each number just for variety. Place all DUCKS in the POND…center playing area….I have a wading pool I have used. Students have their HOME POND, and on signal, go to center pond, select a duck, return back to their pond, complete the stack, then head back to center pond and repeat. Go for set amount of time, count number of ducks collected….since I use alphabet ducks, I can ask if they can create a word with their ducks, or have them place them in ABC order.

**I ordered Ducks from Oriental Trading Company…they have a wide variety! The ABC Ducks are $13.99 for set of 26. Number Ducks are $6.50

for a dozen (0-9 are numbers on ducks.)

Capture the QR Code—For this activity, you will need to make QR codes and have devices that can read/scan the codes. I have access to 9 iPads in my PE class. After making your QR codes with your desired stacks, laminate them on an index card. Scatter the QR code cards in the middle of your playing area, then divide your class into teams and place them around the playing area with a hoop, set of cups for each team member and iPad for each team. On your signal, have first person run and pick up a QR code card, they return to their group, scan and do the designated stack, upon completion, next person leaves to retrieve a QR code card, upon returning, scan and group completes stack. You can do this activity for a time limit—2 to 3 minutes, and see which group “CAPTURES THE MOST QR CODES.”You could also have group members doing a fitness activity while waiting for QR Code to return their group.

Cup Stacking Cards—This activity came from the book “MAKE IT, TAKE IT (Fitness Games) by Hal Cramer purchased from The Great Activities Publishing Company. The template for the cards are in the book, I simply copied to card stock and laminated. Some of the stacks are traditional, others are variations. Students are having to look at the card, and re-create the stack with their 12 cups. You can use this activity with small groups, or individual students. Just place Cup Stacking Cards face down in the center of the playing area, students or groups are spread out with their own cups…on the signal, student retrieves a card, completes the stack, then you can have them do an exercise upon stack completion, or just have them go and retrieve another card. You can stack for time, see how many cards students collect, then go another round. Play music while students are stacking and exercising. You can also vary movement pattern for students to pick up cards.

Fetch 12—This is a REAL CARDIO workout if you do individually…but you can do it with partners or in groups of 3 or 4! Establish a large area for cups….marked with cones, or on one half of gym floor. If doing individually, each stacker will set ELEVEN of their 12 cups inside the area, and return to a spot outside the area with their ONE CUP…this is their HOME SPOT/BASE. On the GO signal, stackers are going to travel in to the cup area and find a cup that matches theirs, and travel back to their HOME SPOT/BASE---you can have them go continuously, or stop, and give a GO signal each time. You can also change locomotor patterns to retrieve cup….skip, gallop, hop etc. Once all 12 cups have been retrieved….stackers will do a designated stack. THIS WORKS BEST WITH MANY DIFFERENT COLORS OF CUPS! If stackers knock cups over when retrieving, then do need to set the cup back up

Simple Stack Tag—In this Tag Game, EVERYONE IS IT!! Have students spread in playing area with their cups in the DOWNSTACKED position…determine what STACKING PATTERN will be stacked when tagged. On the “GO” signal, stackers chase and tag other players. When tagged, must move to the nearest set of cups and stack the designated pattern. Once the stack is completed, player can re-enter the game. If cups get knocked over, must replace them in proper position…students CANNOT be tagged when stacking.

Cup Stack Bingo—using Bingo Card maker, I made Cup Stack Bingo cards. Students will draw a STACK card (3-3-3, 3-6-3 etc) from center pile, go back and complete that stack, and mark completed with some type of token or marker….you can play this individually or with a partner…if with a partner, partner is doing a physical activity while other partner is stacking…Individual Bingo cards have worked best for me. You can also have them do a different locomotor movement to the STACK card pile.

Speeding Tickets—I downloaded these off the WSSA website and just put my school initials on them. Kids like stuff, so I thought this would be fun for them to have to show where they are at in each stack…Beginner, Fast, Really Fast, World Class. I printed off on yellow paper so it really looks like a Speeding Ticket!!

Pokemon Stacking—I have these Pokemon Cards that I use for several other activities, so I created a “master” card with the Pokemon Characters and stacks. I place the Pokemon cards face down in the center of our play area…students can work individually or with a partner with the “master” card. Students do a locomotor movement to the cards, select a card, return back to their card, and complete the stack that matches their card character. I have gone for time…two minutes, see how many cards collected, given each Pokemon card a point value, so students have to add up their points, or see if the can capture ALL the characters on their card in the designated time period. I’m sure there are other variations that could be created, this is what I have come up with so far….kids have had fun with it!

Triple Up/Triple Down Tower Relay

You do need JUMBO CUPS for this activity….6 per team. Start by placing six JUMBO cups in the center of the gym, stacked on top of each other. Next, place DOWNSTACKED 3-3-3-3 approximately 3 feet back from Jumbo’s….spacing them evenly apart, then set a cone or marker to mark the starting spot for the first relay team member. On the GO signal, the first stacker will UPSTACK the 3-3-3-3 pattern of cups, advancing to the JUMBO, once JUMBO is reached, remove the top cup, and set on the ground, return back and tag next stacker, who will then DOWNSTACK the 3-3-3-3 pattern to the JUMBO, upon reaching the JUMBO, take another cup off and place on the previous one, creating the JUMBO tower…Once the 6 JUMBO Cups have been stacked into a tower, team raises their hand or sits down signifying their team’s completion. You can then go a second round, to take the tower down. If regular cups or the JUMBO Tower is knocked down….it must be fixed before continuing.
