ITEM 201 – PRODUCTION OF HIGHWAY AGGREGATES
Comment: The following applies to contracts in the east/northeast counties (Westmorland, Kent, Northumberland and Gloucester counties), where quality of sandstone is generally too poor to meet the requirements of Table 201-9 in the Standard Specs:
Replace:
201.2.4.2 Sandstone shall be composed of clean uncoated particles free of clay, organic or other deleterious materials, shall have not more than 25% Dust, and shall be obtained from a source that is solid insitu.
Add:
201.2.4.2.1 Sandstone rubble and highly weathered sandstone containing mud seams will not be acceptable.
ITEM 208 – COLD MILLING – ASPHALT CONCRETE
Comment: You must give the Contractor details of what asphalt is to be removed. If core data is available indicate locations of cores and thickness of existing asphalt.
Add:
208.4.1.1 Full depth, full width removal shall be carried out between the limits of Contract.
Add:
208.4.1.1 Full depth removal shall be carried out between station 2+268 and station 2+335. Partial depth removal shall be carried out between station 2+225 and station 2+268 and between station 2+335 and station 2+350.
Comment: Give any asphalt core data available. Give depth and location of the core samples.
208.4.1.2 Asphalt Concrete Core Data indicates a depth of 235 mm of asphalt 1 m left of station 2+255, 250 mm of asphalt 2 m left of station 2+509 and 215 mm of asphalt at center line of roadway station 2+598.
ITEM 260 - ASPHALT CONCRETE
Comment: Bridge deck surfaces are always considered a Type I Highway.
Add:
260.1.3 The Bridge deck surface is to be considered a Type I Highway.
Comment: Penetration grade will be 120-150 or 150-200. If you take a line across the province thru Norton everything south of the line will be 120-150 grade and everything north of the line will be 150-200 grade except the Fredericton area which will be 120-150 grade.
Add:
260.2.1.1.2.1.1 The asphalt cement shall be 150-200 penetration grade.
or
260.2.1.1.2.1.1 The asphalt cement shall be 120-150 penetration grade.
Comment: Aggregate from Westmorland County and Restigouche County must consist of crushed quarried rock.
Replace:
260.2.2.1.1 The coarse and fine aggregates shall consist of crushed quarried rock.
Comment: Deck asphalt is always placed in two equal lifts resulting in a total of 150 kg/m2.
Add:
260.4.3.10.1.2 Asphalt Concrete "D" will be placed on the surface of the two bridge structures in two equal lifts resulting in a total amount of 150 kg/m2.
Comment: When we are paving a structure and the approaches.
Add:
260.4.3.11.2.1 Asphalt Concrete “B” will be placed on the approaches in 2 lifts of 120 kg/m2 each.
Comment: When we are paving a roadway over a pipe or box culvert with no structure paving involved.
Add:
260.4.3.11.2.1 Asphalt Concrete "B" will be placed in 2 lifts of 120 kg/m2 each.
Comment: For most roadways with a route number less than 100 or roadways with a high volume of truck traffic.
Add:
260.4.3.11.2.2 Asphalt Concrete "C" will be placed in 1 lift of 100 kg/m2.
Comment: For roadways with a route number greater than 100 and most other roadways.
Add:
260.4.3.11.2.2 Asphalt Concrete “D” will be placed on the approaches in a single lift of 80 kg/m2.
Comment: The profilograph requirements are deleted from most structure contracts due to the short paving length we do off the structure.
