Course Description:Networking Basics. Instruction includes, but is not limited to: safety, networking, network terminology and protocols, network standards, local-area networks (LANs), wide-area networks (WANs), Open System Interconnection (OSI) models, cabling, cabling tools, routers, router programming, Ethernet, Internet Protocol (IP) addressing, and network standards. Students that have not declared IST as their degree program may register for this class on a space available basis. 3 credits.

Rationale:

As members of a rapidly maturing information society, we are engaged in an ever-growing partnership with computers and information technology. The information technology competency has emerged in virtually any career as a nice-to-have skill to a job-critical skill. The sharing of information is vital to all of us whether it be at home and in schools, institutions and/or businesses. Knowledge of networks and the role they play in today’s exploding information society are considered critical to getting and keeping a good job.

Outcomes/Learning Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Effectively use the OSI Model, Internetworking devices, IP addressing, LAN media and topologies, structured cabling and electronics.
  2. Effectively use PC hardware and software, patch cables, install structured cabling, use test equipment.
  3. Recognize and use appropriate technological language.
  4. Effectively use media, standards, protocols and access for network communications and connections.
  5. Work with the binary and hexadecimal numbering systems when calculating subnets.

Hands on Lab, exercises, instructor lecture, instructor led discussion, online assignments.

Evaluation Procedures:

  1. Review Questions 300 points (25 points per chapter)
  2. Journal 200 points (50 points per journal)
  3. Lab Activities 300 points (25 points per chapter)
  4. Exams 200 points (2 Exams)?
  5. Technology Article 200 points (2 articles)

Journals-Maintain focus on what you learned instead of what you did.
Technology Article-Should be typed, double spaced and length should be adequate to cover a summary of article plus your opinion. NOT 2 or 3 lines. Choose a subject concerning Networking, either new or something you have just learned about. Write a summary of the article and a source of the information (can attach a copy of article but I still want a summary in your words), web address, book and author, newspaper and edition etc. Include enough information that a third person reading the article gains a summary (main info) of the article. Then include your opinion, analysis, and insight on the article. For example: why you found it interesting, your thoughts on the info, if you liked or disliked it, if you think it will make it etc.

Grading Scale:

90-100 = A
80-89 = B
70-79 = C
60-69 = D
59 and below = F

Make-Up Policy:

1. All assignments and projects must be completed by all students.
2. Graded Class work may not be made up.
3. Students will not be allowed to slow the progress of the rest of the class because of work missed due to absences.
4. The student will be responsible for catching up on work missed due to absences.
5. In cases of severe illness, students may bring in documentation from the doctor and hospital; and in these cases, student will be allowed one week after returning to class to turn in all assignments deemed late during such absence with no late penalty. The student must make up any exams missed during such illness the next class day attended after such illness. Exams and assignments are scheduled on the Assignment Schedule and students are given this schedule the first day of class.
