Description
Two supervised school media internships of 150 hours each are required for New York State certification. These experiences give the student the opportunity for skill development and problem solving through observation and practice in a school media center. Students must be supervised by a certified school media specialist, one in an elementary (K – 6) school and one in a secondary (7 – 12) school. Additionally, one placement must be in a high-needs school district. A minimum of 24 credit hours must be completed prior to internships and should include courses that require field experience.. Internships may be completed consecutively in one semester or in two separate semesters.
Goals
The student/intern will be directly involved in the following roles and responsibilities:
- As teacher, the library media specialist collaborates with students and other members of the learning community to analyze learning and information needs
- As instructional partner, the library media specialist joins with teachers and others to identify links across student information needs, curricular content, learning outcomes, and a wide variety of print, non-print, and electronic information resources.
- As information specialist, the library media specialist provides leadership and expertise in acquiring and evaluating information resources in all formats
- As program administrator, the library media specialist works collaboratively with members of the learning community to define the policies of the library media program and to guide and direct all activities related to it.

Requirements
Two class meetings: one at the beginning of the semester and one at the end. Three reflection papers and a project paper for each internship experience. Each internship experience must total 150 hours.
