Purpose

Direct the professional development and administration of the dental care services facility within the authority of the governing board by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors

Reports To

Director of Outpatient Health Services

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise five (5) or more employees in the Dental Health Services Department

Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this department; responsibilities include interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; supervising students; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems

Essential Duties and Responsibilities – include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Provide clinical supervision/consultation to the dental staff

Examine, diagnose, and plan treatment with patients

Consult by phone with other health professionals (dentists, physicians, and pharmacists) when necessary

Assist in training of dental assistant, dental hygienist, and dental students

Direct and coordinate activities of dental staff and services

Develop policies and procedures for various dental activities and ensures implementation

Represent organization at community meetings and promotes programs through various news media

Provide dental care to clients/families in accordance with standards of professional ethics and practice.

Document treatment provided in a timely basis; ensure patient communication and clinical findings, recommendations and treatment

Identify and respond to potential and/or high-risk situations inclusive of notification of such agencies as Department of Children and Families as appropriate

Participate in the organizational plan for dental operations, including but not limited to, identification of activities designed to respond to community dental need and access issues

Participate in the development of a manpower plan for dental operation that provides for the appropriate and efficient use of personnel to meet community and individual dental problems

Participate in the development of the financial plan for dental activities budget, including staffing and support plan, equipment needs projections with ongoing monitoring and evaluation

Maintain current knowledge of and adheres to third party payor requirements; ensure that the department meets productivity standards as defined for federally qualified health centers

Supervise development, implementation and operation of a quality assurance program as it related to patient care, insures the regular monitoring of outcome measures and dental record review

Formulate and recommend changes in dental programming which are seen as needed from analysis of clinical data

Conduct regular staff meetings to address dental issues, new protocols, and changes in procedures, and maintain minutes of the same

Facilitate the development of healthy behaviors/lifestyles through preventive screening and assessment programs, patient education and counseling and use of community resources; incorporate cultural backgrounds into teaching process as appropriate

Advocate for the Health Center and serve as a liaison to local and State professional societies, organizations etc.; provide presentations as may be needed at Board Meetings, Professional Advisory Committees, funding requests, etc.

Maintain best practice knowledge level by participation in continuing education opportunities, and utilization of current professional reference materials; maintain continuing education requirements as needed for licensure and board certification; maintain affiliation with and evaluation of teaching programs as needed

Education and Experience

D.M.D. or D.D.S. or equivalent (doctorate medical degree)

Minimum of 7 – 10 years experience (may incl. residency exp. if applicable)

Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints

Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems

Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases

Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Maintain a valid Connecticut Driver's License and state mandated level of insurance. License to practice dentistry in the state of CT

Proficient with MS Office Suite, Internet and email
