MATH with Mr. Karches:

Last week in math we finished practicing our multiplying two digit by two digits using the traditional algorithm. This week will use our multiplying skills in the context of word problems, both single and two step problems. On Friday the 23rd there will be a multiplying unit test. The week of the 26th our class will begin our division unit. As always keep practicing addition, subtraction, multiplying and division facts with your child. If you are in need of resources please let me know so I may send some home with your child.

SCIENCE with Mrs. Winnert:

In science we are starting our Animal and Plant Adaptations unit. We learned this week what an adaptation is by reading the picture book, "What Do You Do With A Tail Like This?" The kids loved it and loved trying to guess what the animal the body part went with. Please ask your child to explain to you what an adaptation is.

During this unit, we will be using both the book, and a lot of other supplemental activities, texts and movies. Jessie Nickerson from Wyoming County 4-H will also be coming back into the classroom to do a lesson with the kids about farm animal adaptations!

At the end of this unit, the end of the month, the students will have a mini project due. Please look for this project explanation sheet in your child's take home folder.

SOCIAL STUDIES with Mrs. Walsh:

We’ve had a lot of fun so far with our unit, Colonial America! We made Pioneer water carriers and butter last week! This week we are making fiddles and punched pie tin pictures. (That is why I asked for cardboard and hammers) Thank you parent volunteers for helping us!

This week students will continue packing their “wagons” for their journey west using $700. We will also discuss the 13 colonies and reasons why people decided to settle in the colonies/move west. At the end of this unit, students will have a unit test and also a mini school project. Each student will pick a colonial job and research it. I will give them a list and a link to use for their research. Students will have to create a wanted sign poster and present their job. We will have two days of a mini job fair where I will split the class in half. Each child will be responsible for trying to persuade someone else to join their workforce. I will send home a detailed note about this.

The “If you Lived in Colonial Times” book and questions are due this Friday, January 23rd.

Please contact us at any time! We are happy to answer questions or concerns! 
