Irish Society of Orthopaedic and Rheumatological Medicine

Announcement—Part ‘C’ Course Sept 10-12, 2015 Dublin

This is the third of a 3-part series of courses dealing with the presentation, diagnosis and treatment of soft tissue lesions with particular relevance to the Primary Care [GP/Physio] situation. At its centre is the Theory and Practice of the Cyriax approach to musculoskeletal examination, diagnosis and treatment, delivered by practising GPs and Chartered Physiotherapists who have trained in the Cyriax approach; there is added input from Consultants in Musculoskeletal Radiology and Rheumatology.

Each part of the series of 3-part course is self-contained and can be taken in isolation with no loss of continuity. For participants taking the Course out of A,B,C sequence, there is a preparatory introductory ‘grind’ in the general principles underlying the clinical and therapeutic approach.

Part ‘C’ deals mainly with the examination of the Lower Limb with differential diagnosis/deductive reasoning by application of clinical principles, identification of treatable lesions by inclusion of appropriately ordered Radiological investigation, and application of mobilisation techniques, injection, and rehabilitation when/if appropriate. It includes common Pelvic and Hip syndromes in all age groups, mechanical and inflammatory conditions of knee, and ankle/foot,biomechanical overview of integrated lower limb function.Specific injections taught include intra-articular injections at Hip, Knee Ankle and Hallux as well as the various enthesopathies and bursae.

Essential contributors to the Course include a Musculoskeletal Radiologist and a Rheumatologist

It is a particularly ‘hands-on’ course with participants expected to both examine and be examined, and ‘sham’ treated, by fellow participants. A system of physical examination is taught which will always stand Primary Care therapists in good stead in any situation where musculoskeletal source has to be confidently ruled in or out.

The course is accreditated by NUIG and forms part of its programme leading to the Post Graduate Diploma in Musculoskeletal Medicine;it can also be used to garnish credits for NUIG’s Masters in Medical Science [M.M.Sc]. Many participants do the course just to develop fluency in assessing and treating lower limb disorders in general,or as part of CPD [16 CPD points]. The ISORM, by virtue of course accreditation, can award a Diploma in Orthopaedic and Rheumatological Medicine to participants in the course series who are successful in subsequent examination.

The Rheumatological component is delivered by pre-Course reading,in-Course lectures by Rheumatologist, and webinar, and self-directed study with assessment via ‘learning outcomes’, between Course parts. The objective is to deliver a Primary Care therapist with special competency in Rheumatology,to include facility in injection therapy,;however, the chief aim of the inclusion of Rheumatology in the course is to highlight the frequent underlying Rheumatological conditions in the isolated musculoskeletal lesion

Part ‘C’ will take place in St James’ Hospital in Dublin,Sept 10-12
