Involve.Canberra Disability Commitment
Supporting people with disability to be part of the Canberra community
This document is about making things better for people with disability in Canberra. We want people with disability to feel valued. We want all people to be treated the same.
We want to make it easier for people with disability to take part in our community. This document has been written by the ACT Government, working together with people with disability and the Canberra community. When you see the word ‘we’, it means these people.
We want everyone to share these ideas
It is important that everyone is treated fairly and can make decisions about their own lives.
Canberra supports the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This is an agreement that makes sure people with disability are treated fairly. It is used in many countries around the world.
We want people with disability to have the same opportunities to take part in our community as everyone else. For example, we want people with disability to work, if that is what they want to do.
It is important to us that everyone can take part in our community.
We want people with disability have the support they need to be able to take part.
We understand that each person with disability is different.
Some people will find things more difficult than other people, and that’s ok.
We will think about a person’s age, background and if they are a man or a woman when we work out what support they need.
We will work together to understand what each person needs.
We will think about how we can best support people with disability who:
- are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- speak languages other than English
- are from different cultures
- are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex or queer.
Everyone should be able to enjoy all the places in our community.
And people should feel safe and welcome everywhere in Canberra.
People with disability are an important part of our community.People with disability add value to our community. And they help to make it stronger.
We want to help people with disability to reach their goals. We think this will make Canberra a better city. We want Canberra to lead the way in supporting people with disability to be part of the community.
If we all work together, we can make Canberra a better place for people with disability.
