This document is a request to provide a proposal and cost estimate for a designer to work with students to design a skin for a web based, touch screen application, working closely with RIO’s programmer and a team of young people.

Response required by end of business on Friday 26 March 2010 please.

AIM

To develop the touch screen that is situated outside the Integrated Health Centre (IHC), Bywva, at Penair School. At the moment the touch screen is out of use, with a static powerpoint presentation and timetable on rotation. Bywva would like to turn it into an interactive resource that informs and updates people on what’s happening at the Centre and enables users to book in sessions and appointments through the screen, linking directly with the appointment system that the Centre’s staff run.

Introduction

Penair is one of three schools to have developed an Integrated Health Centre (IHC) on their school site, offering innovative and creative ways of providing services that will benefit the health and well being of young people, their parents, teaching staff and the community. The students at the school won a funding bid from Our Money Your Dreams to enable them to buy furniture and equipment for the centre – including a touch screen.

We are looking for a designer to work with a group of students from Penair School to come up with the interface design, layout, and content for the resource. A RIO programmer will be creating the application for the booking system that is required and the content will be delivered by drupal.

Audience

The resource will be used by young people, their parents, teaching staff and the wider community. It’s primary audience will be people who are not comfortable going into the Centre, or people who want to find out what is on offer in the centre, or make an appointment when the centre is busy, in session or outside of opening hours/ in school holidays/ at weekends.

What’s Needed

At the moment the touch screen is out of use, with a static powerpoint presentation and timetable on rotation. The IHC would like to turn it into an interactive resource that informs and updates users of what’s happening at the Centre and enables users to book in sessions and appointments through the screen linking directly with the appointment system that the Centre’s staff run.

The resource needs to be easy to use and accessible for all ages, appealing to the more technologically savvy young people but also simple for adults without great levels of technological awareness.

Resource Needs:

  • About Us
  • Appointment System
  • Feedback Forms
  • Profiles of Activities

All of which need to be easy to update by staff and students.

The resource shouldn’t be text heavy and should have strong images and visuals. It needs to look fresh and contemporary, simple and clear, it must not patronise users in language or images.

The selected designer will need to work closely with RIO’s programmer to make sure the look and feel of the resource corresponds with its functionality.

Challenges

A RIO programmer will be developing the software specifications for the delivery platform and we are looking for a designer to create a skin for this with the students. The students will need to have direct involvement in the design of the resource, being involved in the content and creation of the look and feel of the front end.

There is currently a static page website being built by students for the IHC and this resource needs to tie directly in with that, in whatever form it manifests. It’s important that the look and feel of the static web page and the interactive touch screen resource are compatible and feel like part of the same thing.

The chosen designers will need to work closely with RIO’s programmer to ensure that the final design corresponds with the site’s functionality

The solution has to represent the best value for money, be sustainable and engender a sense of ownership in the students and staff involved in the creation of the resource.

Deliverables

School deliverables

Written content and images for the resource as well as the student group to work on the project and produce design ideas. Links to necessary websites and pages, overall project management

Supplier Deliverables

Support and guidance for students designing and creating for the project, outside of the arranged sessions.

Budget

Penair School has £800 to spend on the design of the application skin.

Timeframe

The resource needs to be built, designed and fully operational by September 2010. Project needs to start in April 2010 with the majority of all work completed by July.

Application

Please provide the following information:

  • name, registered office address and legal status of the organisation submitting the application
  • details of the services that you are able to provide

  • a cost estimate and timeline for the work outlined
  • a brief indication of your knowledge and any experience you have on projects of this nature.
  • examples of relevant material that you have produced for other clients

This application will indicate your suitability for the position and does not represent a final quote or proposal at this stage.

Assessment

We are looking for a designer that will be able to work with the students and support them to develop the visuals for this touch screen resource. Our assessment criteria will be based on the following:

  • Has the applicant fully understood the brief, the requirements of the school and students to ensure the touch screen resource is useful to all visitors of the Integrated Health Centre?.
  • Has the applicant demonstrated an innovative approach to design and to the challenges presented by the students brief?
  • Has the applicant considered the cost efficiency of their proposal and presented solutions that represent good value for money?
  • Has the applicant demonstrated experience, knowledge and understanding of designing these sorts of visuals before and presented examples of relevant work undertaken in the past?

Please submit all applications to Katy Luxton, Real Ideas Organisation, 21b Pydar Street, Truro, Cornwall, TR1 4AY, or email them to
