TITLEOFINSTRUCTOR POSITION Professor of Chemistry, Full Time Tenure Track, Dual Enrollment Specialist

PLEASE PROVIDE A SUMMARYANDRATIONALEOFFACULTY POSITION REQUEST(Youmaycopyand pastefromyour COMPREHENSIVE OR ANNUAL PROGRAM REVIEW.)

BC has made a commitment to dual enrollment and supporting a program at Wonderful Academy in Delano. High school teaching is very different than teaching college chemistry. Although it is possible to hire adjuncts from industry or retirement to teach a college course, this is not acceptable for dual enrollment.

High school teaching takes much more specialized training (credentialing at the high school level) and experience. And just as importantly, there needs to be a great deal of planning, coordination, and communication between all the parties involved. When not done correctly BC makes develops a very poor reputation in the community.

This year an adjunct instructor with no previous teaching experience was asked at the very last minute to teach two college courses to high school students at a remote location. This has resulted in many problems. 1. There is no equipment for the students. 2. There are no books for the students. 3. There are no calculators for the students. 4. The instructor has never taught college. 5. The instructor has never taught high school. 6. The hiring of this instructor has depleted the chemistry adjunct pool in Bakersfield. 7. Medical issues arose which forced their withdrawal, with the rest of us struggling to pick up the pieces, causing massive headaches, ill feelings, heavy overloads, and poor relations with the Wonderful company.

If this relationship is to survive then a “specialist” must be hired who 1) meets min quals, 2) is CA high school credentialed (regardless of Wonderful's policies, as this person may work elsewhere too), and 3) knows that their assignment includes teaching high school students.

The successful candidate will teach at Wonderful in the fall with a class likely at the Delano center, and then at Delano and possibly the main campus during the rest of the year.

INTERNAL REVIEW OF POSITION

  1. Explain why the work cannot be reassigned to other staff within the department

Every person is currently fully loaded/overloaded with our current course offerings. If we reassign someone to teach high school, not only are they being set up for failure (inadequate training for those students) but also our programs here suffer substantially. There is serious growth happening now in the department, and a cut in our offerings will set many students back in their ability to successfully navigate STEM and/or Allied Health pathways.

  1. Impact on College/District if position is not filled

Not bringing in a person to cover this CONTRACTED program at Wonderful Academy will seriously affect that relationship and likely taint future partnerships with others in the valley.

  1. Is a temporary employee currently performing the work of this position?

 Yes No

This was originally set up with a new adjunct person, but medical problems arose. It is currently being handled by placing 3 of our own staff into (heavy) overloads (1.2, 1.4, and 2.0), with a concomitant disruption of current class structure and focus.

  1. New position: How is the work assigned to this position presently accomplished? See C. above
