Studio in Photography

Course Overview

Overview/Objectives:

This class is designed to help students develop his/her own creative way of seeing through the camera (develop a photographic eye). It is geared to facilitate visual problem solving through a variety of learning techniques and to increase visual literacy through critiques and appreciation for the art of photography.

1st Semester- Students will have an understanding of the following:

Unit 1: Composition & Presentation

Unit 2: Camera Functions

Unit 3: Beginner Photoshop

Unit 4: History of Photography

2nd Semester- Students will develop skill in:

Unit 5: Lighting

Unit 6: Advanced Photoshop

Unit 7: Surrealism in Photography

Unit 8: Abstract Photography

Quizzes: There will be a quiz at the end of most units. Please be sure to take notes in a photography journal as we cover each topic of study.

Final Exam & Project:

Final Exam: given at the beginning of May. It is a culmination of every unit covered during the year. Students should hold onto quizzes & notes as they will be helpful for this exam.

Final Project: this project is based on all of the skills taught throughout the year. It is given after the final exam and due by the end of the year.

Grading:

The art department uses the following grading procedures:

Homework- 20%

Class work/Projects/Quizzes- 80%

**There will be a midterm project (in class) as well as a final project due at the end of the year.

Camera:

Students will need a digital camera and corresponding USB cord for this course. The school has one SLR camera for students to use during school hours, however this cannot be taken home. Often time’s students have borrowed from friends or family if they do not have their own. Any format or brand will work perfectly. NO CAMERA PHONES.

Processing Fees:

Students will be required to have final prints developed commercially at a local photo-processing center: Walgreen’s, Delaware Camera, Eckerd, Rite Aide etc. **Students with financial difficulties should make their teacher aware so that arrangements can be made to help cover this fee. In addition to this, students are reminded that many homework assignments will need to be printed at home.

Supplies:

**Please remember that there is a 40% off coupon in the Michaels, Joanne’s and AC Moore’s fliers and the coupons are good at any of the 3 stores!

Supply lists have been sent home. Please make certain to have all supplies by Monday.

Art Partners:

Students will have the opportunity to join Art Partners. It is a club designed to help defray the costs on art supplies, as they are expensive. Possible activities include: Concert in the Café fundraiser, Holiday Art Auction, and the Art Partners reception in June. Meetings will be on the announcements, see Mrs. Rice-Gaiser in room 130 for details.
