Oregon Department of Education Module II

“Differentiating Instruction Using Lexile Measures and OSLIS”

Trainer Introduction to Module II:

Purpose of the Training Modules

Module II is a K-12 follow-up workshop to Module I. It is expected that participants in this workshop will be familiar with Lexiles, Lexile tools, and how to conductLexiled database searches using the Oregon School Library information System (OSLIS). Module II provides teachers with a hands-on opportunity to locate articles in OSLIS that support Oregon’s Content Standards and fit within the Lexile range of students in their classroom. Through the use of Lexiles and the resources available through OSLIS, teachers can differentiate instruction to better meet the needs of all learners and increase reading performance. Because this workshop is designed for teachers to practiceonline Lexiled database searches, it must take place in a computer lab.

Participants will be provided a brief overview of differentiated instruction. Next they will learn how to access content standards’ documents from the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) website and how to use the “Selecting Materials for a Standards-Based Lesson” template. They will then be given a quick review of the procedures for using OSLIS to conduct searches. The majority of time in this workshop is focused on providing teachers the opportunity to locate Lexiled resources for classroom instruction.

Presenters may select from a variety of completed templates to share during the presentation. In each of the examples, standards for the content area (science, art, social science, etc.) were first identified. Then appropriate reading and writing standards were selected. Some examples also address other content standards. Example templates are included for Elementary (grades K-5), Middle School (grades 6-8), and High School (grades 9-12).

Goals for Module II:

At the completion of Module II participants will:

  1. Understand the basic components of differentiated instruction,
  2. Use OSLIS to locate resources that support Oregon’s Content Standards and meet the Lexile range of students in their classrooms, and
  3. Use content standards’ documents on the ODE website and the “Selecting Materials for a Standards-Based Lesson” template to begin lesson design incorporating differentiated texts.

Materials

Module II materials include this introduction, a PowerPoint with accompanying notes pages, a “Selecting Materials for a Standards-Based Lesson” template, and example lesson templates. These documents are available on the ODE “Lexiles in Oregon” webpage at

Presenters will need the following materials for this workshop:

  • Computer Lab in which to conduct the workshop
  • Hard copies of sample templates, “Selecting Materials for a Standards-Based Lesson”
  • Hard copies of template, “Selecting Materials for a Standards-Based Lesson”
  • PowerPoint Presentation with notes pages
  • Handouts of PowerPoint presentation

Participants will need to come to this workshop with:

  • A lesson they intend to teach and the titles of any text they use with that lesson
  • The Lexile range for their classroom (elementary level) or for one of their classes (secondary level)

PowerPoint Presentation

The PowerPoint is designed as a slideshow to be presented in a computer lab setting using a computer and projector. Presenters may modify the PowerPoint to meet specific workshop needs. The presentation includes three parts. Part I provides an Introduction to differentiated instruction. Part II introduces participants to the “Selecting Materials for a Standards-Based Lesson” templateand how to access content standards using the ODE website. Part III provides a review of how to locate Lexiled articles using OSLIS.

Notes pages accompany most of the slides and provide additional information for presenters. To access the notes pages open the PowerPoint and go to View - Notes Page.

If you wish to print copies of the notes pages for reference during your presentation, go to File Print. In the drop down box labeled “Print what:” select Notes Pages.

Handouts can be generated for workshop participants in a variety of layouts using the handouts feature built into the PowerPoint program.

Note: It is highly recommended that this PowerPoint presentation be used in conjunction with live Internet access so that participants can learn a portion of the process via the PowerPoint and then view the process live.

Context for the ESD /OEMA /OSL /ODE Collaborative

“Differentiating Instruction Using Lexile Measures and OSLIS” was a Training of Trainers workshop sponsored by ODE in cooperation with the Oregon State Library (OSL) in December 2004. Participants were staff development specialists from Education Service Districts (ESDs) and several districts. Oregon Educational Media Association (OEMA) members Martha Decherd, Patty Sorensen, Jim Tindall, and Melanee Lucas—assisted byBlake Albretsen from EBSCOhost®--provided the training on OSLIS. Otis Fulton from MetaMetrics® trained participants on ”The Lexile Framework for Reading.” Nine of the 28 Training of Trainers’ participants—two at primary, two at upper elementary, three at middle school, and two at high school—contributed to the design and the content of the modules.
