There will be 10 DQs total throughout the semester. Responses must be a minimum of 150 words and must be substantial and significant, not just “I agree…” or the like. If minimum word-count requirements are not met, point value will be forfeited. Grammar and content will also determine point value. Responses emailed after the deadline will forfeit entire value.
D. Quizzes
Three quizzes will be given throughout the semester according to the dates noted. Each individual quiz will be worth a total of 15 points.
E. Written Assignment
It will be graded out of a total of 170 points. The paper should be a minimum of 1,050-1400 words in length (excluding Title and Reference page). The individual paper must be written in the third person and must be formatted pursuant to the APA style. The paper will be typed, double spaced, Times New Roman 12-point font with 1-inch margins on all sides. The paper should be given a proper title page and include page numbers.
For this assignment, the student will find a news article about a possible abuse of power by a police officer. The student will research that police department’s policies and procedures, state/federal laws, and any other pertinent information. Student will conclude whether based on his/her research, the officer abused his power or not. Students will be required to submit their topic in advance and receive approval. We will briefly discuss APA format in class. See additional dates/ deadlines below.
Students are required to conduct research and cite to a minimum of three scholarly sources, excluding the article itself, using the proper APA format. Wikipedia is not an acceptable independent academic source for written assignments. It can be used to gain a general understanding of the subject matter, but it cannot be listed as a source on research-based papers. The same is applicable to Dictionary.com, Cliffnotes.com, Answers.com, and other similar sources.
F. Tests:
All tests are closed notes/closed book/closed materials. Tests #1 and #2 will be graded on a 100-point scale. Each test may consist of any or all the following: short answer questions, multiple choice questions, and/or essay(s). The number of possible points per question will be noted in the test instructions. Mini-test #3 will be worth 60 points and will consist of the same types of questions. The instructor reserves the right to curve the test grades.
The final exam for the course will be comprehensive. It will be given in two parts over the course of two days. Part I will be graded on a 125-point scale and will be a combination of short answer, multiple choice and true/false. Part II will be graded on a 100-point scale and will be essay(s) questions. Students will be permitted to use one (1) 3x5” index card front and back handwritten (no typed wording) for the final exam. Index cards will be stapled to each student’s exam and turned in.
IV. Classroom/Course Policies
A. Late/Make-up Work:
Graded assignments are due at the beginning of class on the established date. Late work is defined as any assignment which is turned in after the due date, even if it is later the same day. Late work will not be accepted. If the student will miss class, it is the student’s responsibility to email the instructor and obtain written permission to turn in the assignment/exam on an alternate date prior to the assignment/exam date listed in this syllabus. If a due date or exam is missed and written authorization was not received from the instructor, then the student will receive a zero (0) on the assignment or exam and will not be allowed to make up the grade. If written permission is obtained, late points may be deducted for assignments turned in after the date listed in this syllabus. The make-up work policy for SISD does not apply to the assignments listed in this syllabus.
B. Tardiness/Absences: Students must comply with the rules for attendance at Americas High School and SISD.
C. Classroom Behavior: Once class begins, this class will function as a college class. No disruption will be tolerated. If a student disrupts lecture, class discussion, or an exam, that student will be asked to leave the classroom. If the student is removed during an exam, the student will receive a zero (0) for that exam. Students are also excepted to follow the instructor’s policy on electronic devices and cell phones. Students are not permitted to take photographs or record lectures without prior authorization from the instructor.
D. Students are to abide by the rules of the Socorro Independent School District, Americas High School, and El Paso Community College.
E. Please see http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/cca881bd#/cca881bd/73 for the list of student responsibilities at El Paso Community College.
F. Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty shall constitute a violation of rules or regulations and is punishable as prescribed by EPCC Board policies. Academic dishonesty shall include but is not limited to cheating on a test, plagiarism, and collusion. There is a zero-tolerance policy for academic dishonesty.
