EMOTIONS ARE GOD-GIVEN

3-8-14

INTRODUCTION: MAN= BODY, MIND, SPIRIT (BREATH), EMOTIONS:

  1. WHAT ARE EMOTIONS?
  2. WHY DID GOD GIVE US EMOTIONS?
  3. DID JESUS EXPERIENCE EMOTIONS AS GOD-HUMAN? EXAMPLES OF JESUS EXPERIENCING EMOTIONS:

1.JOY-JOHN 15: 9-11:

English Standard Version (ESV)

9As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.10If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love.11These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

2.GRIEF AND SORROW-

A.LAZARUS-Jesus RAISES FROM GRAVE; JESUS MASTER OF DEATH.

28And when she had said these things, she went her way and secretly called Mary her sister, saying, “The Teacher has come and is calling for you.” 29As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came to Him. 30Now Jesus had not yet come into the town, but was[b] in the place where Martha met Him. 31Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and comforting her, when they saw that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”[c]

32Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw Him, she fell down at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”

33Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled. 34And He said, “Where have you laid him?”

They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.”

35Jesus wept. 36Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him!”

37And some of them said, “Could not this Man, who opened the eyes of the blind, also have kept this man from dying?”

Lazarus Raised from the Dead

38Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39Jesus said, “Take away the stone.”

Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”

  1. 40Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?” 41Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying.[d] And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. 42And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.” 43Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!” 44And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.”

THE FULL PASSAGE READS INTHE ENGLISH STANDARDVERSION: John 11:3-5,

3So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.”4But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

B. JERUSALEM- Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem.

Luke 19:41-44

English Standard Version (ESV)

41And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it,42saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.43For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side44and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

3.Anger: (John 2:15-16).
Just as Jesus' compassionate nature at times led Him to grieve and sorrow, it also led Him to be angry. Perhaps the best known expression of His anger was when He drove the money changers out of the temple in Jerusalem at the Passover. John describes it this way: "So He made a whip out of cords and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; He scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold doves He said, 'Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father's house into a market!' "

4.Peacefulness". (John 16:32-33).

Along with love and compassion, ANOTHER emotion of Jesus seemed to have a unifying effect upon His entire BEING. That is the emotion of peace. As Jesus prepared to leave His disciples in death He told them, "But a time is coming and has come, when you will be scattered, each to His own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world

5.Love(John 11:3-5).John 11:3-5 (ESV).

THEREFORE,
If compassion characterizes Jesus' feelings toward the multitudes, love epitomizes His relationships with those closest to Him.

THE MOST MARVELOUS EXAMPLE OF CHRIST’S LOVE FOR ALL:

  1. JESUS (MAN’S CREATOR) HANGING ON THE CROSS, SPILLING HIS BLOOD, ENDURING MOCKING, ENDURING INTENSE PAIN, AND ASKING FOR GOD THE FATHER TO FORGIVE THEM, FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY WERE DOING. (THIS IS A LEVEL OF LOVE THAT WE HUMANS CANNOT BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND.)
  2. HIS RESURRECTION DEMONSTRATED THAT THOSE WHO LOVE AND FOLLOW HIM WILL ALSO EXPERIENCE THE RESURRECTION AT HIS SECOND COMING.

CONCLUSION: THERE IS A VITAL PLACE IN THE LIFE OF THE CHRISTIAN FOR:

A.EMOTIONS, B.REASON,

C.THOUGHT,

D.MORAL VALUES, AND

E.THE MYSTERIOUS BREATH OF LIFE. WE ARE MADE IN THE IMAGE OF GOD. LET US HONOR HIM WITH OUR OBEDIENCE, LOVE, AND SERVICE
