Session One 9:15-10:15

Intro to the Darkroom by Donna MooreSpecial guest, Donna Moore, from the Community Darkroom creates a classroom camera obscura. *All teachers welcome.

Leadership Tract: Public Speaking by Dr. Suzy Prentiss Learn the basics of communication including public speaking from Dr. Prentiss from UT. *All teachers welcome.

Choice in the Art Room: Elementary by Karen Bertollini and Cheryl Burchett Karen and Cheryl will be discussing resources she uses to assist when using choice. Examples of successful projects, and time to discuss concerns, successes, and best practices.

Choice in the Art Room: Elementary by Chelsie Nunn Teachers will participate in a successful lesson that incorporates student choice. Chelsie will lead a gesture drawing lesson that focuses on material choice. Dialogue about integrating student choice into lessons and considering changes to current lesson plans to incorporate more student choices.

Choice in the Art Room: Middle by Angie McCarter & Logan O’Connor Logan and Angie will lead a panel discussion about success strategies and challenges when using choice in the classroom

Digital Art with Choices: Middle & Upper Elementary by Abby Malone Abby will lead a digital art lesson that incorporates student choice using Pixlr.

Thinking Like An Artist: Middle by Lucie Gilot Lucie will discuss how to teach creative thinking skills, enabling students to make good choices in the art room.

Pop Goes the Portrait: High By Val Sigmon: Objective: Analyze values in a color photo of a face and translate that into a pop art portrait. Student work: Use a simple formula to produce a portrait in the pop art style. We will use acrylic on canvas which will both be provided. Bring your own brushes AND a letter size color printout of a close up head shot of yourself or someone else OR AN ANIMAL. The printout will be drawn on SO DON'T BRING A PHOTO YOU WANT TO KEEP. (This painting lesson is on the easy side and is appropriate for grades 7-12.

Choice in the Art Room, Mixed Media: High by Erin Kalb Objective: Create a piece of mixed media art using different techniques to layer a variety of materials on to a panel. We will have basic supplies available, but feel free to bring your favorite paint colors, papers, fabric, etc. to add to your piece!

Guiding Student Choices for Success in Honors and AP: High by Anna Boyd Anna will introduce Research-O-Rama: Research based project to help students dig deep into their concentration topics for AP, and how to curate their own gallery show! Choose Your Own Adventure: A fun and interactive format to guide students in creating their breadth assignments for honors and AP.

Whole Art Teacher Tract: Self Defense by Jerry Lewis Teachers will learn the basics of self-defense. Wear comfortable clothes. *All teachers welcome.

Session Two 10:30-11:30

Kiln Training by Mack Hickey Learn the basics of proper kiln usage, kiln safety, and kiln maintenance from our “kiln guy.” *Required for new teachers and new digital kiln users. *All teachers welcome.

Choice in the Art Room: Elementary by Jenny Snead: Jenny will show video examples of different ways to use choice in the art classroom: Limited choice, full studio-choice, challenge-based choice in the art room.

Honors and AP Discussion: High by Cheri Jorgenson Bring your ideas and concerns about AP Studio Art. Here are some possible topics: AP Summer Assignments; Class Schedule and Structure; Student Discipline and Motivation; Concentration Selection and the element of Choice; Collecting and Storing Portfolio Images; Assessment and the AP Rubric; AP vs. Dual Enrollment

Advanced Art Discussion: High by Anna Boyd How to create structure in Advanced Art classes and allow for extensive student choice. See examples of 2D, 3D, and 4D lessons. Structure is created through the assignment of a topic that is specific to a dimension, and then demos are given based on materials for all types of medias that fit under that area. Students then write up a proposal for their project, fulfill the expectations of that project, and then present/ critique the final artwork.
