Procedures /
  • TSW be introduced to each sewing tool that is in the sewing tube that matched their machine number.
  • TSW discussed how they think they will use these supplies during sewing club.
  • TSW become familiar with the different parts of the sewing machine.

  • TSW review the sewing machine parts poster and compare it to the sewing machine they will be using.
  • TSW work with a partner to match the parts of the poster to their own machines.
  • TSW then identify the parts of their own machine to the group.
  • TSW watch the short video: How does a sewing machine work?
  • and
  • TSW then open up their machine to see the bobbin, bobbin case and thread.
  • TSW learn how to thread their bobbin.
  • TSW learn how to pull their bobbin thread up to the top, so they can hold onto their “tails” before sewing.
  • TSW sew straight lies on scrap fabric

  • TSW review how to thread a bobbin and make sure their bobbin thread is up on top of their machine.
  • TSW watch the teacher thread one machine while going through the parts of the machine the thread must pass through.
  • TSW thread their own machine.
  • TSW have the partner at their table check their machine.
  • TSW test to see if their machine sews.
  • If it doesn’t sew, then tsw recheck all the places the thread is supposed to go to make sure it is threaded correctly.
  • TSW then try to sew again.

  • TSW learn how to use a rotary cutter so they can cut their fabric. TSW watch the teacher as she explains how to use the rotary cutter safely. TSW watch how the teacher uses the ruler to measure the fabric on the cutting mat and then cut it correctly to size.
  • TSW cut 5 1/2 “ squares for their coasters
  • TSW iron 4 of the squares in half.
  • TSW sit with the teacher and weave their fabric pieces together and pin them in place.
  • TSW take their correctly woven pieces to their machines and sew a straight line down each of the sides of the coaster ¼ “ away from the edge of the fabric.
  • TSW turn their coaster inside out, poking the corners out and checking for holes.
  • TSW iron the coaster flat.
