What have you learned from these leadership responsibilities? What questions have you had while working on them? What are some connections you’ve seen between these projects and the coursework you have been doing?

10/10/16

I have learned a great deal so far during my internship experiences. I have supervised bus duty in the mornings and afternoons, learning to supervise a large number of students and teachers at once. I have conducted discipline meetings with the principal, learning the school’s discipline plan in detail in the process. Through serving as the administrator-designee to IEP meetings, eligibility meetings, and parent conferences, I learned the importance of appropriate parent communication and the fact that, as an administrator, you are expected to know much more than you may actually know. I had to ask questions and consult administrators in higher positions sometimes in order to answer questions that parents or teachers posed. The module concerning the special education process in 509 was especially helpful to me during the special education meetings I attended.

I learned about finance as it relates to salaries and step increases, as well as our school safety protocols. Further, I learned behind-the-scenes how our PTO is run and what must be included in the meetings. I facilitated several instructional team meetings, including grade level, focus team, department team, and faculty, where we disaggregated a variety of data, including MAP, SOL, and common assessment scores. We used this information to plan instructional strategies. The module concerning technology integration certainly assisted me during these planning sessions.

Perhaps my most valuable internship experience so far has been developing our school improvement plan. This opened my eyes to so many aspects of the school of which I have previously known very little, including our baseline data, curriculum improvement (which dovetailed nicely with our curriculum and Title I discussions in 509), professional development, community relations, and school climate. Before working on this project, I never knew all of the aspects involved in strengthening a school.

10/31/2016

This cycle of hours proved to be very beneficial, as I was able to branch out from the middle school setting a bit. I first met with Mr. Bobby Shields, Principal of Kentuck Elementary School. We discussed the scheduling of the Interactive Achievement testing at the school by grade level, as each grade tests once weekly in the computer lab. We also discussed the scheduling of teachers and students, specifically as this relates the special education and the inclusion model (KES is a full-inclusion school). Furthermore, we talked about the importance of community involvement. KES is greatly involved in the Dan River community, as is evidenced by the amount of volunteers at the school and the number of events hosted by the school. We made plans for me to assist Mr. Shields with the next event, a fall festival, on November 18.

Next, I visited Ms. Elizabeth Craig, the Director of Secondary Education, at Central Office. We discussed primarily the details of creating and scheduling an 18-week county-wide science assessment, and I will be assisting her with creating that assessment in Interactive Achievement on November 4 and November 8. Also, we discussed the testing and application process for the Pittsylvania County Governor’s School program. I will be helping Ms. Craig with providing an orientation to the Governor’s School program next semester.

Finally, I met with Mr. Steve Mayhew, Principal of Dan River High School. We discussed the high school discipline process, and how it compares with that at the middle school level. We also discussed the principal’s communication methods with the faculty. I was impressed by the fact that Mr. Mayhew sends out a memo to the staff every Monday morning, containing important dates and reminders. Not only does this practice keep the faculty informed and up-to-date, but it also reduces faculty meeting time.

In addition to the hours spent at central office, and the elementary and high school levels this logging cycle, I of course continued to take on administrative duties at Dan River Middle. I analyzed discipline data using the SWIS program, and was able to break down offenses by frequency, grade level, day of the week, and time of day. I then shared this data with the faculty. Furthermore, I served as an administrator-designee to a parent conference where academics and bullying were discussed, facilitated instructional team meetings, and provided a resource for new teacher orientation training.

The final cycle of internship hours has certainly been busy. I mainly stayed at the middle school for my hours, as the semester is winding down and it was difficult to get away to other sites. I worked closely with the other members of our school’s leadership team to develop a more conducive schedule for the spring. As it stands now, the special education teachers are giving up a planning period each day to teach an academic support class to identified students. While this class is certainly beneficial, the lost planning and collaboration time has been extremely taxing on the special education teachers. As a leadership team, we decided that a change to the schedule would have to be made for the spring semester in order to give the special education teachers more time to write IEPs and hold IEP meetings during IEP season. I composed a schedule for each grade level in order to rotate the students in the academic support class through each core teacher, thus taking a more collaborative approach to teaching these students and distributing a more equal workload to teachers.

Furthermore, I was able to dive more in depth into analyzing discipline data in SWIS. In addition to disaggregating the data, I had the opportunity to share results with members of the VTSS and leadership teams, as well as with the faculty at large. We then used this data to make decisions for the school regarding discipline policies, scheduling, as well as rewarding positive behavior. We planned incentives (outside time and candy) for promoting adherence to our school’s behavior matrix.

Also during this cycle, I was able to serve as an administrator-designee for several meetings, including CSIT and instructional team meetings. It was very interesting to be able to conduct meetings in this capacity, and to be the one to whom people looked to make decisions. These experiences were somewhat intimidating, but I found that each meeting I conducted helped me feel more comfortable in the position.

Overall, the internship hours that I logged this semester have been extremely beneficial. I have served in a variety of administrative roles, and I have definitely gotten out of my comfort zone. While I have enjoyed learning about administration from the middle school perspective, I look forward to expanding my leadership skills to other settings next semester.
