30 years of INTERGEM
30 sparkling stones for the visitors’ prize

Idar-Oberstein,October 2 2014. When Constantin Wild opened his exhibition stand at the first INTERGEM, it was 1984. And today, the trade fair in Idar-Oberstein is still a red-letter day for him, an appointment not to be missed. On the occasion of the 30-year jubilee the gemstone merchant from Idar-Oberstein is bringing some fitting highlights with him: he is donating an unusual set in the shape of the INTERGEM logo for the visitors’ prize.

Sparkling prizes for the 30-year jubilee

Visitors to this year’s INTERGEM can look forward to some wonderful prizes. Among other things, Constantin Wild has made available a colourful, sparkling set in the shape of the INTERGEM logo: “Months ago, the INTERGEM-team and I discussed the idea of donating a special prize on the occasion of the jubilee. It inspired me at once. And there couldn’t have been a more fitting idea than to pick up on the logo.” In addition, Constantin Wild is well known for his colourful stones, and for the slogan ‘The Value of Colors’. So this stone-spiral composition is no coincidence. Wild consciously selected stones which make him distinctive and with which he has a particular association. Shocking pink tourmaline, mandarin garnet, spinel, Canary tourmaline or yellow sapphire: a total of 30 stones are waiting for their new owner. “Apart from stones from South America, Asia and Africa, there are also some royal blue hauyns from Germany. I’m already looking forward to the draw!” enthuses Wild.

One of the original exhibitors

As one of the original exhibitors, Wild has been able to watch the format develop over the years. He also recognised the growing potential – particularly for local exhibitors: “INTERGEM put exhibitors from Idar-Oberstein next to one another for the first time, making them direct competitors. That was a completely new experience for all of us”, says Wild, adding: “At the end of the day, it’s competition that provides the best conditions for innovation.” According to the gemstone connoisseur, for example, this novel form of networking helped to enable people in the gemstone trade to adjust more rapidly to the globalisation and mechanisation of the sector: “INTERGEM was an important factor in enabling our traditional craft to move into the modern age.”

A major jubilee is also always an opportunity to look ahead. And in future, in the opinion of Constantin Wild, who runs the family enterprise, representing the fourth generation of his family in doing so, it will become more and more difficult to hold one’s own in view of the enormous variety on offer at trade fairs: “Having said that, both the special atmosphere at INTERGEM and the time at which it is held are sure to continue to attract major and important buyers – and make the event one of the world’s leading trade fairs."

Feeling the pinch in the gemstone trade

The market is getting tighter and tighter, not only for the trade fairs. The entire gemstone sector is feeling the pinch in terms of the supply situation: “It’s becoming more and more difficult to acquire good-quality raw stones at a reasonable price on the world market, as everyone is after them”, explains Wild, who has been familiar with that market for more than 30 years. In spite of that, the gemstone lover remains optimistic: “Thanks to many years of good relations with our suppliers and a well thought out stock policy, we are still in a position to offer special stones even now.”
