General information
ISS-Connect is a volunteer program run by the International Student Support team in Student Life. It aims to provide a supportive network for newly arrived international students through friendly, practical and competent assistance during new students’ first weeks at Deakin.
ISS-Connect volunteers:
· are both the local and international students from Deakin University
· are highly valued, active participants in the process of “internationalisation”
· raise inter-cultural awareness amongst Deakin University staff, students, and the wider community
· make new friends from different parts of the world
· further develop your leadership, communication and cross-cultural skills
· get a fabulous “appreciation” lunch after completion of the program
· obtain a certificate of participation which will look great on your CV
· can request a reference from an International Student Adviser when applying for a job
Become an ISS-Connect volunteer and enjoy the satisfaction of helping international students adjust to their new environment and the Deakin way of doing things.
Responsibilities and tasks of ISS-Connect volunteers
ISS-Connect volunteers are involved in:
• Helping out individual or small groups of newly arrived international students with public transport questions; opening a bank account; shopping for essential items; socialising over a meal on or close to campus.
• Assisting at the International Student Briefing (ISB) during International Orientation Week.
• Running student forums during the International Student Briefing.
• Socialising with new students at every opportunity and without prompting, making them feel welcome and at home.
• Answering questions from newly arrived students about University life, study, the surrounding community and the Orientation program.
• Organising and taking part in activities during the ISS Student Briefing, at Melbourne City Tour and various events from Week one to Week four.

How do I become an ISS-Connect volunteer?
Complete this application form with as much detail as possible by 5pm, Wednesday 30 April. Email the completed form to Jennifer Hsu: .
You will be informed of the outcome of your application by Friday 2 May COB via email or phone.
Should your application be accepted, you will be invited to a group interview. Group interviews will be 45 minutes in length and conducted between 5 to 9 May. You must be available for a group interview in order to proceed through the recruitment process.
