Dear Colleague

INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY OFFICER: NEXT STEPS

This circular follows up on Circular 13-061/S&C about the developing role of International Solidarity Officer (ISO).

Our thanks to those associations and divisions that have submitted the details of their International Solidarity Officers. We have received a pleasing number of returns and we are in the process of mapping the spread of ISOs.

If your association or division does not yet have an International Solidarity Officer, you are urged to encourage members to step forward to undertake this role. A suggested role description is also attached as Appendix 1. When you have recruited an International Solidarity Officer, please complete their details on the attached Form 17and return it to the International team at Head Office.

As a next step, Head Office will contact previous participants in the Union’s international development and internationalising learning courses to encourage them to offer to become International Solidarity Officers. The mailing will include the pro forma attached as Appendix 2.

Please look out for completed forms so that they can be given speedy consideration at your next meeting.

You may wish to use this pro forma locally in your work to recruit an ISO.

Experience shows that the international work of the Union attracts members who have not previously thought of themselves as activists. For example, young members and black members have been prominent on the Union’s international development courses.
