East China University of Political Science and Law

Founded in 1952,the East China University of Political Science and Law (the former East China University of Politics and Law) is among thefirst group of universities of politics and lawestablished by the People’s Republic of China.The university now has two campuses in Changning District and Songjiang District, covering an area of more than 1300 mu (214 acres), and about 20,000 students and more than 1,400 faculty and staff members. The university has 15 schools and departmentswith 22 undergraduate programs, 20 master’s programs, 10 PhD programsand a post-doctoral mobile station. The International Program of Juris Master in International Economic Law

ECUPL has been cooperating with Willamette University on the Chinese Law Program in English since 1984, witnessing the success of the program for 27 years. The Chinese Law Program admits students from law schools in USA, and the credits completed by participants during the program are recognized by the American Bar Association. The university also holds similar programs in cooperation with the University of Sydney and the University of Leeds.It has prominent professors with sufficient teaching and research experiences, and thus can provide this international program of Juris Master, in order to help international students overcome the language barrier when studying in China and meet the increasing demands of international students for studying law in China.

Goal of the Program

The program is a master’s program intended for non-Chinese citizens committed to career of legal practices in international investment, international trade and relevant Chinese laws. It mainly focuses on international law, economic law in China and Chinese legal practices, in order to promote the students’ abilities to deal with legal issues concerning trade and investment in China.

Academic Staff

Exceptional professors from ECUPL will be teaching in this program. They all have teaching experience of many years, and most of them have taught in famous foreign universities for a long term. They are not only proficient in English, but also experienced in international legal practices, and therefore will provide an ideal study environment for students. Besides, some prominent scholars from USA and Europe will be invited to give lectures for students.

Course of Study

The program is a two-year course of study. To be qualified for the master’s degree, students must successfully complete 54 units of credit, consisting of units of regular courses, legal practices and the thesis. The program can be prolonged to at most 5 years. The time spent on practices and thesis should be no less than 4 months respectively.

The Degree

Students who have completed the required units of credit and passed the thesis defense will be awarded the J.M. degree from ECUPL.

The Career Prospective

The program mainly aims at training lawyers forlegal practices, and students have abundant access to internship opportunities during the program. After graduation, students can undertake legal practices concerning China and international trade, or choose to apply for a doctoral degree in law.
