PEER SUPPORT WORKER

Permanent Part time- 24 hours per week

LOCATION: Newmarket, Ontario

JOB SUMMARY:

The Peer Support Worker provides direct assistance and support to clients by facilitating groups (such a WRAP), identifying recovery needs; and sharing skills, knowledge and information regarding Wellness and Recovery values. This position has the primary role in coordination and service delivery at the LOFT and Krasman Peer Support Drop In (2days per week). Through a team oriented professional approach, the position provides direct support to individuals to increase their independence, dignity and self-respect. They will work in collaboration with other LOFT staff.

Note: May be required to work with consumers in their homes and may therefore be exposed to second hand smoke. Will be required to assist in cleaning units and preparing units for occupancy

QUALIFICATIONS:

·  Self-identify as an individual who has lived experience with mental health and/or addictions.

·  Ability to apply harm reduction, addiction recovery philosophies and psychosocial rehabilitation principles and practices

·  Graduate or current participant in peer support training(s) is an asset

·  Related experience in providing personal support to vulnerable adults with mental health and addictions

·  Possess knowledge in the area of recovery education including WRAP & Pathways to Recovery

·  Ability to engage in client interactions, negotiate complex boundaries of self –disclosure and appropriate working relationships

·  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required to work in a team environment

·  Experience working with other professionals in Human Services

·  Good analytical, time management and organizational skills with an ability to facilitate groups and follow-up on issues or activities with clients

·  Crisis intervention and problem solving skills to intervene in conflict situations

·  Knowledge of local community agencies and other professional services available is essential

·  Knowledge of the issues faced by adults with mental health and or addiction or homelessness

·  Written and computer skills sufficient to produce and maintain logs, files, records or statistical information.

·  Able to assist in cleaning and setting up supportive housing units as required.
