Course Description:

This course is designed to prepare the student for college algebra. It covers real number properties and operations, variable expressions, first degree equations, and inequalities, second degree equations, linear analytic geometry, systems of linear equations, polynomials, exponents, radicals, rational expressions, functions, relations, graphs of inequalities and logarithms.

Prerequisite: Math 025 with a C grade or higher, or placement from COMPASS recommendation of 41 or higher.

Required Textbook and Supplies:

*Intermediate Algebra by Aufmann and Lockwood 9th edition with WebAssign and DVD’s

* A calculator with LOG and EXPONENTIAL functions

* graph paper

Course Objectives:

The student will demonstrate a working knowledge of the material covered in Chapters 1-10 of the textbook. The topics are listed in the course description above. Satisfactory completion of the homework, chapter tests, and the course final should indicate to both of us that you have achieved the course objectives. You should leave this course well prepared and with good confidence to begin Math 130, Math 143,

Math 147 and other course which have an Intermediate Algebra pre-requisite.

Outcomes Assessment:

You will be asked to complete a student evaluation at the end of the semester. Also, regular informal feedback will be solicited throughout the course in an effort to improve the class as we go along. Please feel free to contact me or CSI with any suggestions or concerns. Don’t wait until some relatively small thing becomes a big problem. The Math 108 FINAL will be a common comprehensive test that will be compared to other 108 students. The comparison will not affect your grade.

Policies and Procedures:

a. Attendance is mandatory meaning you must put time on the computer at least 4 days a week and 2 hours each time in order to be successful in this course!

b. It is very important for you to do the assignments because practice is the only way to develop and

improve math skills. Homework and quizzes must be completed by due dates specified. Any late homework you will have only 48 hours to complete with a 30% penalty. All homework and quizzes are taken on your Web Assign Account.

You must get a 70% or better on homework assignment in order to move to the next assigned quiz. Homework assignments and

quizzes you will get 3 submissions. If you don’t meet the 70% requirement for homework, then email me so I can move you along.

c. A student will be subject to a failing grade (0 credit) if caught cheating on any test or copying another student’s assignment.

d. A missed test will be recorded as a zero unless you make arrangements with me prior to the scheduled test time. If you must miss an exam, contact me before the test to schedule a makeup test.

e. You may replace your lowest chapter test score with your Final Exam grade. If you miss a test, that would be the score replaced. You cannot replace a 0 test score resulting from some form of cheating. You must complete the Final exam and you cannot replace your homework average. Final exam is on or before May 14th

Academic Integrity: Please read the behavioral policy on Honesty starting on page 38 of the current CSI Catalog. Any violation of the policy will be dealt with severely, including but not limited to, being dismissed from the class and/or given a grade of “F” for the course.

Disability Services: Any student with a documented disability may be eligible for reasonable accommodations. To determine eligibility and secure services, students should contact Student Disability Services at their first opportunity after registration for a class(es). Student Disability Services is located on the second floor of the Taylor Building on the Twin Falls Campus. 208.732.6260 or e-mail Marita, DeBoard at .

On-line course evaluation statement:

Students are strongly encouraged to complete evaluations at the end of the course. Evaluations are very important to assist the teaching staff to continually improve the course. Evaluations are available online at: Evaluations open up two weeks prior to the end of the course. The last day to complete an evaluation is the last day of the course. During the time the evaluations are open, students can complete the course evaluations at their convenience from any computer with Internet access, including in the open lab in the Library and in the SUB. When students log in they should see the evaluations for the courses in which they are enrolled. Evaluations are anonymous. Filling out the evaluation should only take a few minutes. Your honest feedback is greatly appreciated!

Grading Procedure Tentative because we might have to combine some chapters

later in the semester.

CSI E-mail

Since email is the primary source of written communication with students, all registered CSI students get a college email account. Student e-mail addresses have the following format: <address>@eaglemail.csi.edu where <address> is a name selected by the student as a part of activating his/her account. Students activate their accounts and check their CSI e-mail online at . Instructors and various offices send messages to these student accounts.Students must check their CSI e-mail accounts regularly to avoid missing important messages and deadlines. At the beginning of each semester free training sessions are offered to students who need help in using their accounts.

CSI CAMPUS SECURITY – The College of Southern Idaho is committed to providing safe campuses for all students. Currently in place is an Emergency Notification System (RAVE) that provides information relating to an emergency on any CSI campus. This information is delivered electronically and can be received by all phone numbers and internet-equipped computers identified by the student. Registration is automatic when students register and contact information can be customized online ( as necessary. The Twin Falls campus is also equipped with an Emergency Warning “Siren” that can be heard outside of buildings across campus. In the event of a signal, students arriving on campus should leave, and others should proceed with caution to avoid the emergency area. Students are encouraged to report any emergency (medical, criminal, behavioral, etc.) that is cause for action. Do this by calling 911 regardless of which campus you are on. If you are on the Twin Falls campus also calling CSI Campus Security at 732-6605 after placing the 911 call (the Twin Falls campus has security personnel available 24/7).

A student may drop a course or all courses prior to the end of late registration (first Friday of the term) without it being recorded on the student’s official transcript. A student initiated drop after the late registration period is considered a withdrawal, and results in the grade of W.

(Students may drop courses online until the end of the late registration period. In order to withdraw from one or more courses following late registration, a completed registration form is required. Instructions on the form indicate when a signature of instructor and/or Financial Aid advisor is required. The completed form may be submitted to Admissions & Records or any off-campus center.)
