Works Cited

Often when students export their Noodletool’s Works Cited list or paste it into an existing document, some of the formatting is lost. This can happen if you export it to Word or Google Docs or other word processors. Returning to correct paragraph formatting is easier to achieve in Word, but it works in Google Docs also.

Works Cited lists use a hanging indent like these paragraphs. In Word, you would just right click over a citation, click on paragraph in the popup menu, and then change the settings under Indentations/Special to “Hanging.” In the same settings box, set the number to the right of the word hanging to .5 and, if necessary, below that set the line spacing to double. Now exit and you should have MLA formatting again.

For those using Google Docs, export your list to Google Docs. Copy and paste the title and entries on your list. Open up your paper in Google docs. At the end of your paper, insert a page break. This forces your Works Cited to be on your last page no matter how much you add or delete from your paper as you edit and revise. Now, just go the last page and paste in your Works Cited. Make sure you did not lose or change the title, the alignment, the line spacing (double), or the hanging indentation. Use the ruler to set a correct indent in Google Docs. If students attempt all this before a paper is due, I can help, but once your paper is turned into Turnitin.com it is a little late.
