COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Pre-AP Studio Art

Prerequisite: Portfolio review by instructor. Meet District Criteria. Semesters: 2/ Credits: 1

This course offers students interested in advanced placement courses the opportunity to go beyond the basic skills of design, drawing and sculpture. The elements and principles of design as well as compositional skills, varied media and technology will be applied to both 2-D and 3-D artwork. The course also includes art history, the cultural influence of art, and career opportunities. Each student will demonstrate his/her accomplishments through a portfolio of artwork at the end of the year. This course prepares students to take on the challenging AP Studio Art course, which is a college-level course offered at the high school that allows for portfolio submission to the AP College Board for possible college credit.

OBJECTIVES:

➢  The students will work on improving their skills in drawing and painting.

➢  The students will use and explore the following media: pastels, colored pencils, oil pastels, collage, watercolors and digital media.

➢  The students will enhance their work with the understanding of various artists through a research paper on a selected style of art – i.e. Impressionist, Pop art, Surrealism, etc.

➢  Sketchbook assignments will be given frequently and recorded as daily grades

➢  Students will explore self-expression and develop a stream of consciousness in their artwork.

➢  Students will learn to analyze and evaluate the relationships of the elements and principles of design in their own artwork as well as in that of others

➢  Students will develop a portfolio and build upon previous art skills. A digital portfolio will be required for all students

➢  Students will be introduced to art from various cultures

Instructional Goals and Strategies

●  Students will use a variety of mediums, techniques, and approaches in drawing to develop concepts and ideation.

●  Critiques and displays of work are ongoing. Students are expected to participate in class critiques of their personal work as well as the work of their peers and master artists. The vocabulary of art will be used to engage in written and verbal critiques of these works.

●  Individual Student Critiques with the teacher will help students learn to analyze and discuss their own artworks and artworks of their peers.

●  Individual Conferencing will assist students in the development of their Concentration work. Students will develop a body of work that is an investigation of an idea or theme that is of personal interest to them.

●  Ongoing instructional conversations with the teacher will help students develop their work. Assessing the strengths and weaknesses in their images, and will provide feedback on how they can further develop their drawings. This will also help students learn to analyze and discuss their own artworks and the works of their peers.

General Course Outline:

●  1st 9 Weeks: Skill building exercises. These are exercises based on developing and polishing technical skills. This work is appropriate for the Breadth section of the portfolio.

●  2nd 9 Weeks: Creative imagery exercises introducing students to new ways of seeing and doing. Much more conceptual ideas will be developed.

●  3rd 9 Weeks: Exploratory study and the development of the concentration.

●  4th 9 Weeks: Final selection and editing

PORTFOLIO REVIEW:

A final portfolio review of all completed assignments including six breadth and six concentration artworks will be part of the student’s final grade. Additional pieces may be added to enhance their grade, however may not be used to replace missing assignments. This is an essential aspect of preparing for the rigorous AP Studio Art class and needed for entrance into college to pursue art as a major.

Six Breadth assignments demonstrating techniques and design elements:

Line, Shape/Form, Value, Color, Space, Texture
