COURSE DESCRIPTION

Algebra II is the branch of mathematics designed to build on algebraic and geometric concepts. It develops advanced algebra skills such as systems of equations, advanced polynomials, imaginary and complex numbers, quadratics, and concepts and includes the study of trigonometric functions. It also introduces matrices and their properties. The content of this course are important for students’ success on both the ACT and college mathematics entrance exams.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

P-AP Algebra II is a difficult subject and each topic builds on another. Daily participation is a must. Do not get behind in your course work. All school rules also apply in this class. While I am speaking to the class, I expect you to be listening and not speaking. However, if you have a question, do not hesitate to raise your hand and ask. You can have snacks and drinks in class but I expect for you to clean after yourself. If you leave a mess in my room I will revoke that privilege from your entire class. I expect you to be in my room every other day for the 95minutes you are assigned to my Geometry class. The only exceptions to this are when you are absent or on a school field trip or activity. I value the class time that we have together, therefore I have set in place a learning environment and an independent work environment. In our learning environment we will review daily notes and have whole class discussion. During this time do not ask me to go to the restroom, to your locker, etc. Just take a pass and be prompt in taking care of your business. If you miss information in the process it is your responsibility to get that information from your classmates as I will not repeat myself. Also please make sure that if you have to sharpen your pencil you do so before I start teaching to avoid disturbing others. In our working environment you are to work independently or cooperatively to finish classwork and get ahead on your homework. If you choose to work cooperatively I expect for you to keep the noise level to a minimum in respect to those who are working independently. During this time I will walk around and help those who need it. Please make sure that you are on task and not working on work for other classes. If you are, I will confiscate the work until the end of class. While I will not keep you from another class, because I honor and respect your time with your other teachers, please remember that I dismiss you, not the bell. My room must be in order and you must be sitting in your seat in order for me to consider letting you go.

GRADING

Homework 20%

Classwork/ Quizzes30%

Tests 30%

Six weeks Exam 20%

1. Classwork/Notes. Every day you will receive printed notes that you must pick up on your way in. At the end of each class I will post my personal notes key on our class website for anyone who was absent or wants to go back and refer to my notes. I will also leave a blank copy for you to pick up in the absent work bin.

2. Homework. Homework assignments will be given each day we have class except on test days. Every assigned problem should be attempted with work shown. Answers without work shown will NOT be given credit.A key will be provided for you either on paper or online. Homework must be done in pencil and corrected in a colored pen. I will check for either an x or a check mark. If there is an x mark I need to see the correction workin pen. If you do not understand how to correct a question it is your job to come to tutoring to get help. If homework is done correctly you will receive a 100. Please make sure that you turn in your homework the minute you walk in to class to the designated tray for your period. I will not ask for homework. If it is not in the turn in tray by the time I pick it up (when the bell rings), it is late and will have 5 points deducted from it. If you do not have your homework you can bring it in by the end of the day or the NEXT DAY (notice I did not say the next class). But the highest that you can make on it is a 90, assuming that everything is done correctly. After the next day, 10 points will be deducted per day

2. Quizzes. Quizzes will be given daily except on test days (about 5-10 questions in length) over the previous day of class work and homework. This is to ensure that you have retained the content taught in the previous class. Because I post my notes key online and you have a day in between each class to come in and get your missing work, if you were absent the day before a quiz you will still be required to take the quiz. These will be graded and handed back to you to use for test preparation purposes. If you are absent for a quiz you need to make it up within 2 days of your return to school. If you do not your upcoming test grade will take its place. Quizzes will not be handed back until everyone has taken them so please do not become the reason that your classmates do not receive timely feedback. You cannot retake a quiz. If you are not happy with your grade I will replace your quiz grade with your test grade if it is a higher grade.

3. Major Tests. There will be one mid six weeks test and a cumulative six weeks exam each six weeks. Each test will be worth 100 points. All tests will be announced ahead of time and posted on our class website and in our class calendar. You will receive a test review well ahead of time to allow you to prepare for each test. If you are absent the class before a major test, but are present the day of the test, you must still take the test. I make all homework and notes keys available online and in person so there is no excuse for you not to get the material even if you are absent. If you do not do well on the mid six weeks test or simply want to increase your score you have the option of coming in to do corrections for half the points you missed or to bump your grade up to a 70. This must be done within 5 days of you receiving your grade. You may NOT take ANY test home, so corrections must be done during tutoring.

aCADEMIC dishonesty

Cheating, plagiarism, and any unauthorized collaboration will not be tolerated in this class. Any student caught cheating will receive a zero for the assignment or test in question. When you cheat you rob yourself of the opportunity to get the help you need from me to succeed. I much prefer for you to fail in honesty then make it up than to pass through lies.

Make-up Work Procedures

For excused and unexcused absences, tests should be made up within one week of your return to school quizzes within two days.Homework must be turned in the day that you return for full credit. If you need to be absent the day of a test it is your responsibility to schedule another time with me for you to take your test. Class notes and homework will be posted on my website for those of you who are absent. There will also be a missed work section in the student center in our class where I will place all your notes and missed assignments in the folder of the date that you missed. It is your responsibility to find out what assignments you missed and pick them up from the missed work section. Because I am making all of your missed material available to you it is also your responsibility to come back to class with your homework done and ready for a quiz.
