Course Description

Mandarin I

Mandarin I is an introductory level course designed for students who have limit exposure of Mandarin. It is also for students who want to improve their pronunciation, characters recognition and writing as well as conversation skills。

The main focus of this course is listening, speaking and Chinese characters recognition. Students are expected to be able to conduct daily conversation. Students will be expected to type in Chinese on computer. Learning strokes order and radicals are important. Therefore, students will understand the development of Chinese characters. We will be celebrating Chinese culture and tradition all year long. This course will help students have a basic knowledge of Chinese Language. Students could choose to pursue higher learning goal in the future such as, SAT Chinese Subject test, AP Chinese, HSK (Chinese Proficiency test)

Description

Students research a topic of Chinese language country . Create a travel brochure on their own or with a partner .

Cooking Projects

Description

After we study lesson about Chinese food, students can form a small group, and each group pick one of Chinese cooking methods. Student will video tape the entire cooking steps and shown to entire class.

Reflection

  1. Students work together in groups and decide which dishes to study and to cook
  2. Students comprehend the recipes they get from cookbooks or Internet
  3. Students present the cooking procedures in a play which is videotaped.
  4. Students learn about a Chinese cooking method and how it is related to a certain culture or geographical area
  5. Students cook an authentic Chinese meal and explain the preparation and cooking procedures
  6. Students use the Internet or library books to research for Chinese recipe
