Seventh Grade Health

Instructor: Mrs. Abby Siems

Course Description:

Health is for one quarter in length, meeting every other day for one semester. This course offers the student an opportunity to view critical current health issues and problems. Emphasis is on the role and choices of the individual in society.

Course Outline:

A. Personal Health and Wellness Unit

The topics covered in this unit are six dimensions of health, wellness, risks and factors that affect health, attitude, values, decision-making skills, goal setting and self-esteem. The emphasis is making healthy, responsible decisions and goals for individual health.

B.  Nutrtition Unit

This unit involves learning about the six nutrients, foods and beverages to avoid, appropriate portion sizes, and daily recommended nutrition. The emphasis is on making healthy choices and lifelong eating habits.

C.  Mental Health Unit

The topics covered in this unit are personality types, emotions, stress and stress management.

D.  Social Health Unit

In this unit, we talk about and practice/model strategies that will enhance interacting with other people of all ages. Topics covered are building healthy relationships, communication, refusal skills, family, friends, peer pressure, conflict and conflict resolution, diversity and tolerance, violence prevention, and abuse (emotional, physical, and sexual). There will be information forthcoming about a presentation concerning the topic of abuse.

Grading Procedures:

The quarter grade is based on total points. Opportunities for success will be provided through class participation, homework, projects, quizzes, and unit exams. Extra credit is available each quarter. The grading scale is as follows:

100.5 and above = A+ 77-79 = C+

93-99 = A 73-76 = C

90-92 = A- 70-72 = C- NHI = 0

87-89 = B+ 67-69 = D+ Excused = omits assignment

83-86 = B 63-66 = D

80-82 = B- 60-62 = D-

59 and below = F.

Before the end of a quarter all NHI markings will be turned in zero – this will drop a student’s grade significantly.

§  Students will receive two late passes during the semester. If a student doesn’t turn an assignment in on the day it is due, one late pass can be handed in with the assignment, with no penalty. However, if it is turned in with a late pass and the assignment has already been corrected and returned to the other students in the class, the best score a student can earn is 50%.

§  Turning in missing work is a privilege and not a right. Students should be the first person asking for missing work and not parents/guardians.

§  Assignments handed in with no name will be posted in the classroom for one week. If they are not claimed within that week, they will be disposed of.

§  Extensions will be given on a student -to- student basis. Please see me before the due date if extra time is needed. The teacher reserves the right to change due dates.

Class Policies

§  I have the right to teach, and you have the right to learn- if any activity or behavior interferes with this process the teacher will address the issue.

§  Textbooks can only be taken out of the classroom with permission from the teacher and are expected to be returned when asked. Students will be charged for books that are not returned.

§  Absences: It is your responsibility to find out what information has been missed. For an excused absence, the student will have 2 days for each day he/she was absent to make-up work. If someone is absent for more than 3 days, see me for other arrangements. Tests must be made-up immediately upon return. Missing work should be turned into the late basket with “absent” written on the top of the paper. Students do not need to use a Late Work Coupon.

§  Substitute Teachers: Guest teachers will be treated with complete respect and cooperation! Students with their names left by the substitute will owe energy.

Dear Parent or Guardian,

Attached is your copy of the course outline for the Rochester Middle School Grade 7 Health Curriculum. This curriculum has been revised and updated, using some of the best research, curricula, and materials available to public schools. Since the health field and its research are ever changing, we are always looking to keep our health curriculum current.
When focusing on high standards students will complete many assignments that show they can understand, interpret and evaluate grade level material they read, see and hear in the English language.

I encourage you to save the course outline and discuss the areas as your child goes through the specific units. I will be encouraging students to communicate with their parents/guardians at home regarding the topics we are learning about in the classroom.

I look forward to working cooperatively, sharing insights and ideas. If you have any questions, feel free to call or email me. Any curriculum materials can be reviewed with me by setting up an appointment. I will return your phone calls and emails as soon as possible.

Respectfully,

Abby Siems
