Instructions for Quantum digital memo recorder LIV-091-321-0000

Getting to know your recorder:

The recorder is designed in the form of a pen, with a pocket clip on its left side when viewed from the front. None of the recorder’s functions are accompanied by talking instructions, but the logical and simple design of the recording process should make it useful for most people.

A circular liquid crystal display (LCD) that is 16mm in diameter is located on the front of the unit approximately 1cm from the top edge.

These instructions also refer to the visible feedback the user would get from the LCD.

Six buttons and two switches control the unit’s operation. All the buttons are circular, 5mm in diameter and recessed slightly to prevent accidental operation; the off/record switch is a textured, lozenge shaped sliding switch on the top of the unit and is 5mm long; the volume switch is a small wheel on the right edge of unit, just below the top.

The play button is 5mm below the LCD and to the right. Opposite the play button, on the left side, is the stop button. Directly below the stop button and 5mm apart is the fast rewind button, followed below it by the fast advance button. The off/record switch is on top of the unit to the right, adjacent to the microphone - which is on the left at the top. The volume control is a small wheel along the right edge of the unit on the same level as the play button.

The speaker grille for the unit is on the front and in the centre, about half-way down and within a tear-drop shaped recess approximately 20mm long.

On the back of the unit, in the centre and 15mm below the top edge, is the erase button. Directly below the erase button is the reset, in a small hole that is just large enough to accept a paper clip or similar-sized probe. The use of the reset feature is discussed at the end of these instructions.

The recorder has a power-saver feature that turns it off if it has been idle for 60 seconds; pressing the stop button for 2 seconds “wakes up” the unit again.

The recorder also alerts the user when the battery power is too low by a small icon of a battery with a cross through it that appears in the LCD.

A combined earphone and microphone socket enables you to listen to recordings in private as well as improve the voice quality of your messages; the unit is not supplied with either of these accessories. The socket for a separate microphone or earphone is located 10mm below the volume control on the right edge.

Inserting new batteries:

Turn the unit over so that the mounting clip is on your right and the top of the unit is uppermost. Half-way down the back of the unit you will find a molded grip area for your thumb; this area is marked tactilely, “OPEN” and an arrow points downward. Apply thumb pressure to this molded area and slide downwards. The battery compartment lid should come free. If it does not come free, apply a very light lifting pressure to the lower edge of the lid, which is on the bottom edge of the unit, while at the same time you slide the grip area downwards with your thumb.

Insert two alkali or lithium AA batteries, ensuring the flat ends of the batteries are in contact with the compartment’s springs. Replace the battery compartment lid by sliding the rounded end with the tab into the top end of the compartment and sliding it forward until the lid locks in place. Ensure the lower edge of the lid is seated properly and makes a smooth fit with the body of the recorder.

The recorder resets itself and the LCD will initially show STOP OMOSO

Using the recorder:

1.  Making a recording:

To make a new recording, slide the recording switch on top of the unit to the right, and then speak into the microphone which is also on top of the unit on the left edge. Holding the microphone about 5cm away from the mouth seems to work best for most users. Stop recording by sliding the switch left to its OFF position.

2.  Reviewing or recalling a message

To review a new recording straightaway after making it, press the play button that is on the front of the recorder, just below the LCD and to the right. To review a message when the recorder is in power-saving mode and the LCD is blank, press the stop button (to the left of the play button) for 2 seconds. The LCD will light up. Press play and review the message.

To review all other messages, use the fast forward or fast reverse buttons to skip to the next or previous message, and then press the play button. The fast forward and reverse buttons are below the stop button, with the fast reverse button being directly below the stop button, and the fast forward button is below the fast reverse button.

Each time you start and stop the recorder it assigns a message number to each recording, starting with 1; this number shows in the top of the LCD. This number system is designed for the user to quickly locate a recording for recall or erasure while skipping back and forth through the recordings. The play function button can also be used to hear the start of each message as the user skips through them, prior to erasing a message.

3.  Erasing one recording:

Locate the particular recording by viewing its number and/or listening to it. Move to the required recording by using the fast reverse and fast forward buttons. Locate the small, circular erase button on the back of the unit, in the centre and just below the top edge. Press and hold down the erase button for 2 seconds; the selected recording will be erased.

4.  Erasing all recordings:

To delete all recordings at once, you must press both the erase and stop buttons together for 2 seconds.

Any Problems?

If the unit “freezes” and does not operate properly, it may need to be reset: push a paper clip wire or similar object into the reset hole; this is located on the back of the unit in the centre, 3cm below the top edge of the recorder and 9mm below the erase button. The recorder will reset itself and should operate normally thereafter.

The recorder’s sound volume will decrease and the display may become inoperative if the batteries need replacement; the small battery icon will also appear in the LCD.

Replacing the batteries:

Turn the unit over so that the mounting clip is on your right and the top of the unit is uppermost. Half-way down the back of the unit you will find a molded grip area for your thumb; this are is marked tactilely, “OPEN” and an arrow points downward. Apply thumb pressure to this molded area and slide downwards. The battery compartment lid should come free. If it does not come free, apply a very light lifting pressure to the lower edge of the lid, which is on the bottom edge of the unit, while at the same time you slide the grip area downwards with your thumb.

Remove the batteries, discard them according to any local regulations and insert two new alkali or lithium AA batteries, ensuring the flat ends of the batteries are in contact with the compartment’s springs.
