Instructions for Head Teacher
School Selection Criteria
Schools need to be willing to allow us access to their schools for a full day, beginning early morning (arriving at the school at 8:00-8:30 am)
Schools should be ANY SAMPLING REQUIREMENTS.
At each school: (1 FGD (6-8 girls: 1.5-3 hours long), 1 IDI (1-2 girls: 1-2 hours long), 2 KII (1 teacher, 1 Principal/ Head teacher: each interview will range from 45 min-1.5 hours[AE1]).
- Schools need to be able to provide a minimum of two confidential spaces for interviews
- A space that students cannot see in, that has doors that can be closed, and that are private places to speak without someone else hearing the conversation[AE2]
- Teachers should be able to privately identify girls that are menstruating
- Please ensure school has a minimum of 15 menstruating girls between the ages of 11-18
- Schools should inform the Research Team in advance the normal times of breaks and lunch
Teacher’s Directions for Selecting Girls to Participate
- Ask teachers if they know of students that are menstruating (teachers are not to directly ask girls at this point).
- Teachers send home consent forms with girls they believe have begun menstruating (consent forms will be provided to the school by Research Team). This should include girls with a:
- Range of ages
- Range of socio-economic backgrounds/status
- Range of grades
- Range of absenteeism
- Range of students with varied academic engagement
- Range of students with varied family structures
- [AE3]Teachers should collect consent forms from the students within two days of handing the forms out.
- Contact Research Team after a minimum of 16 consent forms have been collected. Please[AE4] text Research Team stating consent forms have been collected.
- Teachers provide signed consent forms to Research Team) on day of school visit.
[AE1]THIS SHOULD BE CHANGED DEPENDING ON THE ACTIVITIES YOU ARE PLANNING TO CONDUCT AT THE RESEARCH LOCATION
[AE2]This may be idealistic. Come up with a realistic requirement given your location and the spaces offered by schools
[AE3]This will all depend on your research protocol and the requirements of the students you are intending to interview.
[AE4]You will want to ensure that you have enough potential students to include in the research activities. Remember, not all students whose parents have given consent may want to participate.
