Instructions for Completing the Reading Schedule:

  1. Fill out the Title of Book, Author, and Total Number of Pages for your version! Remember that some books (like Night by Elie Wiesel) have multiple versions with different page numbers.
  2. Cross out the bottom two rows. We will only be completing five Reading Journals, which—at 10 points each—will count as your third reading log.
  3. For the remaining five “Date Assigned” boxes, please put today’s date.
  4. Fill out the following Due Dates (each due date will be a Narrative Reading Day):
  5. Thursday, 4/6
  6. Friday, 4/14
  7. Wednesday, 4/26
  8. Friday, 5/5
  9. Tuesday, 5/16
  10. For “Pages to Read,” divide the Total Number of Pages in your book by 5. Then, assign approximately that many pages for each due date.
  11. For example, the 25th Anniversary Edition of Night has 109 pages. 109 ÷ 5 = 21.8
  12. That means, each entry should cover around 21-22 pages.
  13. Page 20 is the end of a chapter, so that’s a good stopping point. Another chapter ends 23 pages later, on page 43. Therefore, the Reading Schedule might look something like…

Date Assigned / Due Date / Pages to Read
3/28 / 4/6 / 1-20
3/28 / 4/14 / 21-43
  1. There are five roles described on pages 167-168 of your SpringBoard. Because there are five due dates, you will have a different role for each due date. Unless you are in a group of six, no two people should have the same role on the same week.
  2. Everyone pick his or her starting role: Discussion Leader, Diction Detective, Bridge Builder, Reporter, and Artist. Make sure that no one in your group has the same role! (Unless, of course, you are in a group of six.) If there is a disagreement, solve it through rock-paper-scissors, best two out of three.
  3. Write your chosen Role for the 4/6 Due Date.
  4. Then, continue down the list, choosing the next role in orderfor the next due date!
  5. Discussion Leader  Diction Detective  Bridge Builder  Reporter  Artist  Discussion Leader, etc.
  6. For “Number of Journal Entries,” you should do math once again. There should be one entry every four pages. Divide by 4, and round to the nearest decimal to find your journal entries.
  7. For my previous example, the 1stsection is ≈ 20 pages, and the 2ndsection is ≈ 22 pages.
  8. 20 ÷ 4 = 5, and 22 ÷ 4 = 5.5
  9. 5 does not have to round, and 5.5 rounds up to 6. Therefore, the Reading Schedule would look something like…

Date Assigned / Due Date / Pages to Read / Role / Number of Journal Entries
3/28 / 4/6 / 1-20 / Bridge Builder / 5
3/28 / 4/14 / 21-43 / Reporter / 6

Please do not write on this sheet! This is for all periods!
