Instructions for Completing the Alignment MatrixContaining the

Revised Subject Matter Requirements Essential for Preparing to Teachthe

California Common Core State Standards in Mathematics

For Commission-Approved Programs Transitioning to

the Revised Subject Matter Requirements

In June 2013, the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (Commission) adopted new Subject Matter Requirements (SMR) aligned with the California Common Core State Standards in Mathematics. Every Commission-approved Mathematics and Foundational-Level Mathematics subject matter preparation program (SMPP) is expected to beginincorporating the updated SMRs during the current academic year (2013-14) and to have fully incorporated the SMRs in 2014-15.

To document how each program is addressing the updated SMRs, each program is required to complete an Alignment Matrix that identifies theclasses, assignments, and/or assessmentsthat prospective teachers must complete in order to learn and apply each SMR.Some institutions sponsor one subject matter program and others sponsor both a Mathematics and a Foundational-Level Mathematics program. An institution offering both math programs should submit information for both programs. It can do so by completing two matrices or within a single matrix thatincludes both programs.Matrix templates are available at

In addition to completing the matrix/matrices, a list of all required mathematics courses for the subject matter program(s) is required. The list must include course titles, course numbers, and brief summary of the course’s content such as might be included in an institution's course catalog. Please do not submit course syllabi.

In addition to the Alignment Matrix and course list, please include a 2-3 page descriptionof how your program will integrate the 8 Mathematical Practices ( ( of the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics(CCSS) ( into and across the mathematics coursework.

Each completed matrices will be reviewed by two colleagues from two other universities that also offer Commission-approved Subject Matter Programs. This requires that at least one person from each mathematics SMPP volunteer for this activity. Participating in the review process will provide an interesting glimpse into other programs and could generate new ideas for your own program. Please consider volunteering to review the matrices from two other institutions. The reviews will tentatively take place in mid-August and mid-September. Following a training and calibration webinar, each pair of reviewers may determine when and where to work.

The review of the matrix, course listings, and mathematical practices description will ensure that all Commission-approved SMPPs will prepare candidates with the content knowledge and mathematical practices required by the CCSS. If either the matrix or description does not provide sufficient information, staff will request additional information from the SMPP.

The Commission requests that programs submit the completed alignment matrix, the course list, and the description of Mathematical Practices by June 30, 2014. All information should be sent to .In the event a program sponsor cannot submit the materials by June 30, the Commission should be o provide an alternative submission date and to provide contact information for the individual completing the documents.

The California Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (CAMTE) and the California Mathematics Project (CMP) have offered to assist programs in completing the matrix or in describing their program’s plan for integrating the 8 Mathematical Practicesinto their program. Please see below for contact information for each association:

• CAMTE: Mike Lutz –, (661) 654-2028

•CMP: Executive DirectorKyndall Brown –.

Staff at the Commission thanks both CAMTE and the California Mathematics Project for offering to provide assistance to mathematics subject matter programs.
