Installing Legato NetWorker Clients

Obtain Software

\\pc-support.otago.ac.nz\PC-Support\Clients\Legato

Download the NetWorker client to a suitable location on your local hard drive. C:\Temp\ is usually a good choice for Windows users; the local desktop for MacOSX users.

Install Client

Windows 2000/XP client installation
  1. Log on to your workstation with an administrative account.
  2. Double-click on the nw713_win_x86.exe file you downloaded earlier.
  3. Click on Next to begin installation. Accept the licence agreement and all defaults.
  4. When prompted for Allowed Servers: enter its-backup.otago.ac.nz
  5. Check Run NetWorker Change Journal on exit. Click Finish to complete the installation. When the NetWorker Change Journal launches, ensure that NetWorker Uses Change Journal and Enable Change Journal for Selected Volumes are both checked. Click Apply, then click Ok for each prompted volume. Finally, click OK to close the NetWorker Change Journal Manager .
  6. Right-click NetWorker User and select Properties.
  7. In the Target field, append "-sits-backup.otago.ac.nz". Don't include the quotation marks and be careful that you do not delete the existing contents of the Target field, which should now look like "C:\Program...\winworkr.exe"-sits-backup.otago.ac.nz
  8. Firewall: If you are running Windows XP with the Windows Firewall (Formerly known as Internet Connection Firewall - ICF) enabled, you will need to allow the backup server (its-backup) to have access to your workstation. Refer to FirewallConfiguration for details.
  9. You may now Log off the administrative account and Log on with your regular user account.
Mac OS X client installation

In the following discussion it is assumed that the user has some familiarity with the Terminal window (Applications:Utilities:Terminal) and unix commands, including the sudo command. If/when you are prompted for a password when you issue a sudo command, you should use the same password that you use when installing applications.
In rare cases sudo does not provide the required access, and you may need to log on as root. It is very easy to cause massive damage to the Mac OS X system when logged on as root. If you do decide to log on as the root user, BE VERY SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

The download step probably placed file NetWorker.pkg on your desktop.

  1. Double-click NetWorker.pkg to run the installer; accept all defaults.
  2. (optional step) Create file /nsr/res/servers containing the single line its-backup.otago.ac.nz

o  In a Terminal window, enter sudopico/nsr/res/servers.

o  Type its-backup.otago.ac.nz

o  Save the file (^O) and exit from pico (^X).
