Description of Bulletin:

The purpose of this Bulletin is to announce a change in Qwest’s policy to the procurement, engineering and installation of central office task lighting. Effective January 1, 2010 all newly-engineered central office equipment fluorescent lighting fixtures will consist of the high performance, energy efficient lighting systems branded as the Airey-Thompson 51 Series T5.

Light Fixture Functional Design Characteristics:

  • Compact Size: 2”x 2” square single tube fixtures
  • Available in 4’ and 2’ lengths
  • Decreased width of the fixture increases the amount of head room available for technicians working on shelves mounted in the top most frame positions (mandatory for NG3 Fiber Distribution Frames)
  • Every fixture is equipped with: one T5 lamp, two hanger brackets, coupler & wire nuts, and complete installation instructions
  • Snap-in covers provide easy access to wiring compartment
  • No. 14 AWG“through wires” consist of a power circuit plus 2 yellow wires (Refer to Figure 1) available for 3-way switching (Refer to Figure 2).

Deployment Rule Sets & Criteria for New Airey Thompson Task Lighting Fluorescent Light Fixture:

New Lineups:

  • Only one fixture design applies for all CO task lighting applications, the same light is to be used for both front and rear aisles.
  • The feed-end box will be used at the beginning of first light fixture in each new lineup. No feed-end box is necessary at the end of the lineup; only a blank end fitting is to be installed.

Deployment Rule Sets & Criteria for New Airey Thompson Task Lighting Fluorescent Light Fixture (Con’t.):

  • Standard 4’-0” lighting fixture installed at the start of equipment aisle/task lighting.
  • The Conditional 2’-0” fixtures will complete the end of lineup lighting (where a 4’-0” fixture would exceed the ultimate lineup length).

Existing Lineups:

  • All lighting fixtures within a lineup must be the same. Mixing multiple types of task light fixtures is prohibited.
  • 1 or 2 existing light fixtures in either the front or rear of the lineup
  • Replace the existing light fixtures with the new 2”x 2” design
  • Relocate the existing two-tube fixtures to growth lineups with more than 2 two-tube fixtures where the lights will be in place for future bays.
  • More than 2 existing light fixtures in either the front or rear of the lineup
  • Continue to use the older two-tube light fixtures until the lineup reaches it’s logical conclusion.

Light Fixture Location and Support Criteria:

  • The equipment task lights will be attached to U-channel mounted below the same auxiliary framing used to support the lineup cable racks.
  • Contiguous end-to-end light fixture installationi is required for all equipment lineups.
  • Fixtures will be centered in the aisles using the attached mounting brackets.

NG3 Fiber Distribution Frame Lineups:

  • When adding any frames to an NG3 Lineup, (either new or existing), the task lighting fixtures will be upgraded to the new 2”x 2” light design to allow for additional access to the upper-most panels in each NG3 Bay.
  • Relocate the existing two-tube light fixtures to other lineups within the office where the lineup has more than two of the established two-tube light fixtures.
  • Task lighting is required in BOTH the front and rear aisles of the NG3 bay.

New Airey Thompson task lighting fluorescent light fixture deployment requires additional new installation criteria for both the 4’ and 2’ lengths:

Light Fixture Stenciling:

  • For warranty purposes, every equipment task lighting fixture will be stenciled/designated with the date of it’s initial installation as per the example label (Refer to Figure 3).

Figure 3

  • The installation date must be stenciled on the fixture housing in a location visible from the floor.

Cicuit Assignments:

  • All frame base cover appliance outlets will be placed on an AC circuit that is separate from any equipment lighting fixtures.
