Subject:Change in Securing Requirement for Fiber Optic Cables(24-Count and Larger)

Action Required:

YES: /  / NO:

Description of Bulletin:

The purpose of this Quality Bulletin is to notify all installation Service Suppliers ofareversal in policy relative to the securing requirements for fiber optic cabling consisting of multi-fiber (24 count and larger) cables.

Based on the findings of an independent study (Refer to Figures 1 and 2) conducted by the Telcordia Technologies Inc® Engineering / Installation Technical Advisory Group (E/I TAG) on August 27, 2008, Qwest will once again require a wrap of sheet fiber paper around multi-count fiber optic cables. The intent of this policy change is to ensure that the integrity of all fiber optic cabling is maintained when they are being secured to central office ironwork.

THIS CHANGE IS EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY…

Installation Requirements

  • Multi-Fiber cable counts (24 and larger)DO require the placing of sheet fiber paper as a means of protection (encircling each cable before it is secured with No. 9 lacing cord) against central office ironwork (e.g., cable rack and auxiliary framing).

Telcordia Technologies E/I TAG Findings:

Figure 1

Figure 2

  • Standard lacing requirements, continue to apply to these cables at every fourth cross strap on horizontally-positioned cable racks and at every cross strap on vertically-positioned cable racks.
  • Single fiber optic cables and smaller multi-fiber cable counts (< 24) will still require the placing of sheet fiber paper for protection at the same securing points listed above. Refer to TP 77350 and TP 77351.
  • Small quantities of fiber optic cables and jumpers should still be bundled together when run on horizontal cable rack. One acceptable method of accomplishing this task for quad fiber runs (and smaller) is to employthe use of a spool of No. 9 lacing cord. The Service Supplier feeds these smaller fiber cables through the lacing spool tubewhich allows the No. 9 cord to simultaneously wrap them into a bundle as they are pulled along.

Note: When adding additional fiber cables to a pre-existing, installed bundle, sheet fiber paper should be used at every securing tie point.
