INSIDE NEW LIGHTING TECHNOLOGIES

12 July 2012, Manchester

Allun Preece, Chairman of the ILP Northern Region opened the event and introduced Alan Jaques, ILP Vice President – Events, who gave the opening paper on 2012’s Silver Lining. He started by taking us back in time to 1983 and looked at what has changed since then, and how to approach the opportunities this brings.

Mark Davies, Senior Lighting Engineer & Technology Team Leader, Mouchel, then explained how the Better Lighting In Sustainable Streets (BLISS) team have been using the Guidelines for Specification of LED Lighting Products and participants were given their own handy copy to take away.

After a networking break, the subject moved to lamps. Plasma technology has developed dramatically over the past decade. Anna Whittaker MSc MSLL, Lighting Design Engineer, Ceravision, explained how microwave-powered systems can be used to replace HID lamps. She was followed by James Wright of INDO Lighting who covered the latest developments in induction technology.

Participants then enjoyed the Tabletop Display Showcase, with representatives from Ask Controls, Lumenpulse, Thorn, Orangetek and Ticknall Solar taking the stage to outline how their technology can assist lighting professionals.

Lunch was followed by Jonathon Hodges of Jason Bruges Studio explaining how to use OLEDs successfully, revealing fantastic projects including the beautiful Mimosa installation: http://bcove.me/2c7d5ujt

Professor Harald Haas from the University of Edinburgh, the pioneer behind a new type of lamp that can communicate as well as illuminate, explained how LiFi technology works.

Participants then heard from Timothy Plumb at Lumenpulse describing the capabilities of a new technology enabling robust lighting control networks over existing AC power lines, followed by Andre Jutel taking the audience through the past, present and future of lighting control.

David Chan from LUX-TSI Ltd tackled the thorny issue of measurements, addressing the confusion over measuring LED light sources and explaining how manufacturers can gain the trust of specifiers and users, and what specifiers and users should ask from manufacturers.

With the event over, feedback indicated that this was a very valuable and interesting day for all lighting professionals.
