This address will include a rationale for including games in the regular teaching of mathematics in the early years. It will also include suggestions for the types of games which relate to the mathematics curriculum and assist with children's meaningful learning of mathematics.

Session 1:
The Maths eCurriculum materials and resources provide a comprehensive and flexible online storehouse specifically developed for Qld teachers. Within the Maths collections, teachers will find sample yearly plans, detailed unit plans, sequenced lessons, sample assessment tasks, student activities & loads of digital resources & many other supporting eResources for students and teachers (Margot McGregor & Jo Smith).
Chance Games for the Early Years: This session will provide suggestions for games that help children understand the ideas of randomness, sample space, and likelihood, and provide opportunities for children to learn to use the language of chance (Steven Nisbet).
Inquiry Maths: (Judy Hartnett)
The Literacy of Maths: All KLAs have specific literacies and we can improve student’s success by recognising them and teaching them to children as a part of that KLA. This hands-on, interactive workshop will explore the literacies associated with early years maths, how to identify them and the importance of teaching them explicitly within the maths KLA (Sally Moyses).
(Lydia Berndt).
Playing with Fractional Numbers: WHAT: Are fractions important in the Early Years? What are the early Fractional number understandings? What activities and teaching sequences best enable young students to grasp the many meanings and uses of fractions? HOW: We will play (children’s ‘work’) with/work through sequenced teaching and learning activities and build a resource of rich questions to focus student learning. HOW WELL: We will also consider a range of assessment tools and strategies (Robyn Anderson).

What does ACARA mean for the teaching of prep?: In this session we will look at the implications of the National Curriculum for Prep teachers. We will focus on the literacy and numeracy expectations and how to effectively teach to ensure success for the students in your class (Kerry White).

Three in a row games for number concepts and more in the early years: (Judy Hartnett)
(Debra McPhee).
If the World was a Village: “Mathematics is a global activity that impacts on the lives of all people and has profound ethical and social dimensions.” (EREA: Mathematics - Educating for Justice and Peace). Join the GLC to discover the global connections that can be made through the study of mathematics. Participants will be presented with a range of FREE teaching resources highlighting the role mathematics can play in introducing students to the world in which they live. The session will focus on the links within Australian Curriculum (Shane Albertson).
Beginning Chance and Data Concepts through Play: From the very early years, chance plays a part in the everyday life of children and their families. We will look at these ideas, and lead to some structured games to introduce some of the important issues and mathematical language associated with Probability and Statistics (Jan Cavanagh).
