MIX NOTES

BOSTYX is an authentic, organic (no backing tracks), fire-breathing classic rock band! The following guidelines should be observed for optimal results:

  • Monitor Mix – Six (6) individual monitor mixes are necessary for optimal performance.
  • Lead vocalist/guitaristDavid Victoruses an in-ear system (for monitors)and two wedges (for guitar and instrument/vocal mix from the other band members).
  • In-Ear: David uses a wireless in-ear monitor system and needs his own monitor mix with his lead vocal (at 100%) and his guitar (relatively, about 25%).
  • Wedges: not technically “monitors” since they’re not coming from the monitor board, two full-range wedges should be powered by a stereo power amp and fed from the “main” stereo pair from David’s ROCKMAN amp (see detail below).
  • Drummer/vocalist Glenn Jostuses in-ears but would also like a wedge or side-fill to “feel” the drums.
  • Lead guitarist Roby Duron uses in-ears also.
  • The rest of the band uses wedges/side-fills as per usual.
  • Lead Vocals – There are multiple lead vocalists in BOSTYX: David Victor (center, lead vox and guitar) and Glenn Jost (drummer, lead vocals). Care should be taken to mix appropriately depending on whether Glenn or David is singing lead. Turn down DV or GJ to backing-vocal levels when they are not singing lead. Roby Duron also sings one song.
We have found that a pitch/delay set as follows works well for our lead vocals:
    Pitch/Delay #1: 15 ms delay, -10 cents pitch.
    Pitch/Delay #2: 30 ms delay, +10 cents pitch
If mixing stereo, pan the two pitch/delays left and right.
Please feel free to liberally apply standard long delay.
  • Backing Vocals – Glenn Jost is a strong singer and hitter. His vocal mic should be at the same volume as the rest of the backing vocalists, though he’ll likely be louder anyway. Drummer vocal should be gated as much as possible to ensure minimal drum leakage.
  • Lead Vocalist/Lead Guitarist-- David Victor uses a ROCKMANXPR stereo (with 2 x ¼” outputs) amplifier. THIS RIG REQUIRES TWO DIRECT BOXES and two ¼” cables to connect the XPR to the direct boxes. The “main”stereo pair at the end of the signal chain goes to the PA/monitors IN STEREO. The stereo signal which should be split left and right tohis two monitor wedges. A passive DI is indicated in case the PA can’t handle ¼” inputs, otherwise it is not needed. A regular ½ stack guitar amp is also in the equipment rider and should be set up just in case the ROCKMAN amp fails.
  • Overall Mix – We respectfully request that you make sure that our vocals are heard above the din. We know we’re loud. Like we said, our drummer hits hard. 

BACKLINE EQUIPMENT

Backline equipment for fly-out dates is listed on separate backline equipment rider document – available on website at at the bottom of the page.

STAGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Sound check is necessary to insure best performance. Whenever possible, mix position should be centered from front of stage.
  • Lighting check is necessary to insure best performance. A qualified Lighting Operator must be available from load-in to load-out. House lights must be controlled from FOH or headset communication from FOH house to venue lighting control.
  • Whenever possible FOH mix position should control fogging/hazing cues to insure best performance. A lighting cue sheet should have been provided to you.
  • All vocal mics should be boom style except lead vocal mic, which should be a straight stand with no boom and must be a tripod (no round plate base!) Singer brings his own mic stand base but venue must provide wireless mic clip and standard Atlas-fitting telescoping mic stand.
  • A minimum 8’ x 8’ drum riser is necessary.
  • Experienced house, monitor and lighting engineers and stage crew to be supplied by Venue.
