EMERGENCY ROOM IR-001

The ER treats approximately 47,000 patients annually. Special features include all types of major and minor emergencies including care of patients with cardiac, pulmonary, trauma, medical and surgical complications. Ingham’s Emergency Department is designed to efficiently evaluate and treat all patients, with a Triage room so those with life-threatening health issues are seen first. Two open wards with bedside privacy curtains, major trauma room, decontamination room, 32 beds, including two private OB/GYN rooms and an ear, nose and throat room, complete the department. All physicians are board certified in Emergency Medicine, and affiliated with the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at MichiganStateUniversity.

Routine duties for volunteers may include:

  • Serving as an information liaison between patients and professional staff to help keep patients as reassured and informed as possible during an often stressful and difficult stay.
  • Providing general assistance to emergency room staff, assisting staff with transporting patients, running errands to lab, x-ray, pharmacy, blood bank, and other duties as requested.
  • Providing assistance to the patient and family is the main responsibility of the student volunteer.Students provide various hospitality services to patients (if medically approved) and families including soft drinks, ice water, coffee, magazines, and crayons and coloring books, and/or stuffed toys for children.
  • Assisting with maintaining cleanliness in the treatment rooms, making up stretchers with fresh sheets, keeping linen stocked in the cabinets, and keeping blankets in the warmer.

CLINICAL NUTRITION – GREENLAWN CAMPUS IR-005

The Department of Clinical Nutrition provides nutrition screening, assessment, intervention, and counseling for adult and pediatric inpatients and adult ambulatory patients at Ingham Regional Medical Center. There are 4 dieticians on staff who see a variety of patients. Some common types of patients include diabetic, oncology, renal, and surgical.

Routine Duties for volunteers may include:

  • General office work and research
  • Assisting with nutrition projects for the dietitians and manager of nutrition and food service;
  • Other duties as requested

OUTPATIENT PHYSICAL THERAPY/SPORTS MEDICINE IR-007

The Sports Medicine department is a comprehensive physician-directed program that helps patients recover from musculoskeletal trauma and athletic injuries. As a national recognized program in Sports and Rehabilitation Medicine, licensed physical therapists and certified athletic trainers tailor treatment plans to the individual, based on physician prescription. Other services include athletic trainers for area high schools; medical coverage for area sports events; injury prevention line and Saturday Sports Injury Clinic; and fitness evaluations.

Routine Duties for volunteers may include:

  • Monitoring patient while on treatment machines.
  • Assisting therapist with outpatient therapy and medical rehabilitation.
  • Assisting therapists in consulting patients.
  • Transporting patients; assisting with cleaning of lydo room/assisting with linen changes.

ORTHOPEDIC TECHNOLOGY IR-010

As the largest dedicated orthopedic hospital in Michigan, we offer better results for our patients. Our orthopedic surgeons combine their talents with our dedicated and skilled orthopedic team to get patients out of the hospital and back on their feet more quickly than the general care hospitals. Our orthopedic techs are an integral part of the skilled orthopedic team.There are eight technicians working in the unit at any given time. Procedures performed include traction, reduction of bones, splinting, and putting on casts. These services are available to the whole hospital and many patients are seen each day on both campuses.

Routine Duties for volunteers may include:

  • Assisting with monitoring patients
  • Transporting patients
  • Assisting with casting application and removal
  • Preparing patients for examination and casting application or removal

OB/NURSERY IR-017

One of life’s most special events for parents begins with the expert and tender loving care provided by the Birthing Center staff and physicians. Childbirth-labor, delivery, recovery and post-partum most often occur in one room. Many patients prefer, and are encouragedin the natural childbirth process. However, if intervention is needed or wanted, epidural (OB) anesthesia and Caesarean births will be the standard of care provided. After birth, couplet care allows mothers and babies to remain together as much as desired. Ingham encourages family-centered involvement to the degree to which parents are comfortable. Within the unit there are 10 birthing suites, 2 delivery rooms, 2 C-Section rooms, and 12 postpartum rooms. The birthing center is staffed by physicians and nurses.

Routine duties for volunteers may include:

  • Talking with family members and children of the patients.
  • Transporting mothers in wheelchairs to lobby as needed.
  • Answering patient call lights
  • Answering phones and routing messages.
  • Transporting specimens to lab and retrieving medicine from the Pharmacy.
  • Observing hearing tests with permission of anadult volunteer or staff.
  • Restocking/organizing pantry, setting up new patient rooms and distributing and picking up food trays.
  • Assistance with clerical tasks such as, filing and/or making information packets and charts

3/4 CHI STEPDOWN VOLUNTEER IR-018

This is a Surgical Cardiovascular/Thoracic Telemetry Step-Down Care Unit with 47 monitored beds. Special features include thoracic, general vascular and cardiovascular surgical patients. Ingham's inpatient cardiac unit staff believes in "high-tech, high-touch" cardiac care. Staff is specially trained to be attentive and responsive to the unique needs of each heart patient and their family. The unit consists of physicians, nurses, nurse assistants, and unit coordinators and is located on the third and fourth floors of the Ingham Greenlawn campus. The third floor has 16 beds and the fourth floor houses 30 beds. Both typically operate at full capacity and usually see a total of 55 patients per day.

Routine duties for volunteers may include:

  • Assisting the patient care staff as requested in providing care and assistance to the patients and visitors of IRMC.
  • Answeringpatient call lights
  • Cleaning equipment, restocking shelves, passing water, , emptying trash, emptying laundry bags, passing/picking up food trays, restocking rooms, and interacting with patients/families

6 SOUTH VOLUNTEER-MEDICAL RESPIRATORY TELEMETRY IR-020

6 South is a General Telemetry Medical Unit. Special features include care of acute and chronic respiratory disorders, including patients requiring ventilator care, and the care of patients needing peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis. In addition, two rooms are available for tuberculosis patients.

Routine duties for volunteers may include:

  • Assisting the patient care staff as requested in providing care and assistance to the patients and visitors of IRMC.
  • Answeringpatient call lights
  • Cleaning equipment, restocking shelves, passing water, , emptying trash, emptying laundry bags, passing/picking up food trays, restocking rooms, and interacting with patients/families

3 SOUTH MEDICAL/SURGICAL NURSING UNIT IR-021

3 South is a 32 bed general medical surgical unit, serving a patient population of adolescent through geriatric. Patients on 3 South consist of non-telemetry general medical patients with varied diagnoses. In addition to the physical care provided, major aspects of care involve assessment of patient and family learning needs, pre & post op teaching, discharge planning, and pain management (including the use of PCA and epidural analgesia).

Routine duties for volunteers may include:

  • Assisting the patient care staff as requested in providing care and assistance to the patients and visitors of IRMC.
  • Answeringpatient call lights
  • Cleaning equipment, restocking shelves, passing water, , emptying trash, emptying laundry bags, passing/picking up food trays, restocking rooms, and interacting with patients/families

INFECTION CONTROL VOLUNTEER IR-024

The Infection Control staff work behind the scenes in preventing hospital-acquired (nosocomial) infections. The majority of these infections come from microbial bacteria brought into the hospital. These bacteria find new opportunities to flourish in their new environment. Think of Infection Control as your hospital surveillance team. We evaluate how and why in-hospital infections occur, and put in place practices that prevent their recurrence. We identify high-risk situations and monitor those from admission through discharge. We are vigilant about creating as antiseptic a hospital environment as possible.Student volunteers are utilized for this process and report directly to the Infection Control Officer.

Routine duties for volunteers may include:

  • Assisting Infection Control practitioner in conducting hand hygiene observations. Will be observing staff compliance with hand hygiene behavior. (Stand in hallway, observe if staff performs hand hygiene when entering patient room and when leaving patient room).
  • Training will be provided with set criteria and expectations to perform “clean” data collection. Orientation to the hospital and individual nursing units will be provided.
  • Not expected to teach or correct staff behavior.
  • Entering data into an Excel spreadsheet.

REBOUND REHAB - PT/OT OBSERVATION IR-025

Rebound Rehab Physical Therapy specializes in helping restore mobility and physical function.Conditions treated include musculoskeletal disorders, neurological disorders, Lymphedema, Urinary/fecal incontinence and pelvic pain. Rebound Rehab is staffed with highly qualified physical and occupational therapists whose cumulative experience and training cover a wide range of conditions, diagnoses, and therapeutic procedures. Our patients have acute and chronic conditions, are post-surgical, and have sustained sports-related injuries.Approximately 50 to 100 patients are seen each day. We pride ourselves on personal and consistent attention to our patients, as well as hands-on individual treatment. This unit is located off of the main campus at 3394 E. Jolly Road, Suite B in Lansing.

Routine duties for volunteers may include:

  • PT observation for orthopedic, oncology and women's health therapy. OTobservation in hand clinic.
  • Providing miscellaneous assistance to staff as requested.

SAME DAY SURGERY IR-026

Many orthopedic and gynecological procedures are done as outpatient surgeries, along with colonoscopies, tonsillectomies, minor eye surgery and more. Any surgical procedure not expected to require hospitalization can be done in Same Day Surgery. Pre-op testing is completed prior to surgery, and nursing staff follow-up post-surgery to ensure continuity of care.The Pre-Op Area has a 28-bed capacity and prepares outpatients for surgery and other procedures. This unit is staffed by one RN and a unit coordinator and is located on 2 Chi on the Greenlawn campus. Emphasis is on interview and assessment skills, pre-procedure and discharge patient/family education.

Routine duties for volunteers may include:

  • Assisting the patient care staff in maintaining patient flow within the unit, providing care to patients and family members, and assisting with discharge of patients.
  • Assisting with hospitality needs, i.e.: getting water, crackers, coffee, etc., for patient, family or guests.
  • Assisting/transporting patients to other departments, if needed.
  • Filling ice coolers, and/or ice packs for patients, as requested by staff.
  • Transporting/assisting patients to their vehicles upon discharge.
  • Processing carts – washing, making up with fresh linens, and putting in empty room.
  • Straightening up rooms/cubicles and returning unused instruments, materials and supplies to their proper places after patient is discharged.
  • Stocking gloves, Kleenex, emesis basins in rooms/cubicles; emptyinglinen and trash.
  • Assembling patient packets, and assisting with other clerical duties as needed.

POST ANESTHESIA CARE UNIT (PACU) IR-027

The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)has 20 patient care areas. This unit is staffed by physicians, residents and nurse anesthetists that deliver patients from the OR and by RN's and UA's. It assists in the recovery process following surgical procedures. Common surgeries include orthopedic, colonoscopies, eye surgery, and open heart surgery. The PACU is attached to the Same Day Surgery Unit and is also located on 2 Chi on the Greenlawn campus.

Routine duties for volunteers may include:

  • Returning patients from the O.R and Radiology.
  • Greeting patients, providing warm blankets, helping with hook up and transporting patients
  • Assisting the patient care staff in maintaining patient flow within the unit, providing care to patients and family members, and assisting with discharge of patients.
  • Assisting with hospitality needs, i.e.: getting water, crackers, coffee, etc., for patient, family or guests
  • Assisting/transporting patients to other departments, if needed

ESCORTS – SOUTH PENN CAMPUS IR-028

The Penn Escort Service is a vital part of the operations of the Orthopedic Campus at Ingham Regional Medical Center. Volunteers are utilized to discharge patients primarily from surgery and two inpatient orthopedic surgical units. Approximately 25 to 50 patients are served by escorts each day. This role is mainly filled by volunteers but the staff also discharges patients in their absence.

Routine duties volunteers may assist with include:

  • Transporting surgical and inpatients within the hospital and assisting with the final stage of the discharge process.
  • Picking up and delivering equipment, and supplies throughout Penn Campus.

Orthopedic Technology- South Penn Campus IR-030

3 North is a 16 bed general medical surgical unit, serving a patient population of pediatric through geriatric. Patients on 3 North consist of telemetry general medical patients with varied diagnoses: Diabetes, CVA's, cellulitis, DVT's, abdominal pain, respiratory infections, and patients who have undergone general, oncological, urological, gynecological, gastrointestinal, ENT, oral, or plastic surgeries. In addition to the physical care provided, major aspects of care involve assessment of patient and family learning needs, pre & post op teaching, discharge planning, and pain management (including the use of PCA and epidural analgesia). Additional areas of teaching and direct care include wound management, diabetic education, ostomy education, drain care, catheter care, blood transfusions, and management of home medications. Volunteers will provide assistance for the nursing staff.

Routine duties volunteers may assist with include:

  • Feeding patients, passing food trays, answer call lights, talk to patients/families, strip beds, empty linen bags, remove equipment from rooms, restock supplies, run specimens to lab, pick up equipment or pharmacy items. Escort discharged patients to lobby.
