Information for Parents
If you son or daughter is going gliding, you may have some questions or concerns.
The first thing that you should know, is that all the pilots who will be flying cadets are all
Glider Pilots with Transport Canada Glider Pilot licences. Many of our pilots have gone
through the Air Cadet Gliding Scholarship program; others flew in the Canadian Air
Force or have extensive experience in civil aviation. All Staff members are Cadets, CIC
(Cadet Instructor Cadre) Officers, Reserve Officers, Regular Force Officers, or Civilian
Instructors.
At the start of each year (March or April) every pilot must pass written exams and
successfully complete at least 2 rigorous proficiency flights with Check or Standards
Pilots. These check flights ensure that the pilot can handle the glider properly, in both
normal and emergency situations. Also, at the start of the fall session, every pilot who
has not flown over the summer must also do a review check flight. At all times the pilots
are supervised closely by senior staff.
During the gliding day, your child will not only go for a trip in the glider, but will help push
the gliders, assist in the takeoffs as well any other activities that your squadron officers
have arranged.
Your cadet should dress warmly in layers. Very often the day will start out cool and then
warm up. But, this is Northern Ontario, so it could 20+ degrees in the morning and then
much colder in the afternoon. Also, your cadet will be outside for the most of the day. In
late fall and early spring temperatures may be at or near freezing.
Cadets should be wearing some type of hat and good running shoes. Sunscreen should
also be worn.
If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact your squadron officers
or the Northern Ontario Gliding Centre.
Information for Cadets
The only reason this glider famil program exists is because of you and we want you to
enjoy every single minute of it. Not only will you get the wonderful chance to fly a glider,
but you will also be a very important member of the gliding team!
Operating a gliding site doesn't just involve flying - it also means keeping track of launch
times, retrieving the glider after it lands, preparing the glider for launch, giving various
launch signals, and a whole lot more. You will be involved in many aspects of the gliding
operation so it's very important that you follow these basic instructions:
Dress warmly in layers! The weather in North Bay can be very different from the
town that you are travelling from. Because the airfield is a wide-open area it can
get very chilly with even the slightest breeze. So make sure you bring gloves, a
hat, and extra warm clothing for just in case. Also, make sure you wear running
shoes - sandals are not allowed in the glider and you will be doing a fair bit of
activity on the airfield (i.e. pushing the glider back to the launch site, hooking up
the glider, etc.).
You are probably going to be outside for the majority of the day, and we all know
how harmful the sun's rays can be. So it's very important that you wear
sunscreen at all times. If you have sunscreen at home - bring it. If you don't - ask
one of your squadron officers and they should be able to supply you with some.
You should also wear a baseball hat or some hat with a brim.
Highly qualified site staff cadets and officers will teach you everything you need
to know to perform a task safely. Not only is it important that you listen very
carefully to what is said by site staff, but please act in an orderly manner on the
airfield. The airfield is a potentially dangerous place if instructions are not always
followed.
The last instruction that you need to follow is this... have fun! If you have any questions,
don't be afraid to ask them. We are here to answer every question that you may have
about gliding. Feeling brave enough to try flying a glider?!? Then tell your famil pilot that
you are interested in giving it a shot and they'll help you!
