INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS

Masaryk University Medical Faculty provides two programmes of study through of the medium of the English language: a six-year programme of study in General Medicine and a five-year programme in Dentistry.

The curriculum for General Medicine leads to a diploma degree in "Medicinae Universae Doctor" (abbreviated to MUDr., placed in front of the holder’s name). MUDr. is equivalent to M.D., i.e. Doctor of Medicine.

The curriculum for Dentistry results in a diploma degree in "Medicinae Dentium Doctor" (abbreviated to MDDr., placed in front of the holder’s name). MDDr. is equivalent to Doctor of Dentistry.

Tuition is through the medium of English. Students are also obliged to undertake training and pass examinations in the Czech language at the end of their first, second, third, and fourth years of study. This is necessary in order to be able to communicate with patients in Czech once they enter practical clinical training in hospitals.

Our degrees are fully recognised in the EU, the USA and in most other countries. For information on conditions for full registration and recognition of the diploma degree in Medicine, successful graduates should apply to the local authorities and professional bodies within the country they want to practice medicine. Tuition fees

Full General Medicine Tuition Fee CZK 249,000.00 per academic year

Full Dentistry Tuition Fee CZK 298,000.00 per academic year

An academic year consists of two semesters. The above tuition fee sums are payable also in two separate instalments for each semester.

Basic conditions of admission

Every applicant must have successfully completed secondary education (i.e. secondary school, high school, college, etc.) resulting in a school-leaving examination, rewarded with a school-leaving certificate (e.g. A-level certificates).

Applicants’ secondary school results and a school-leaving certificate are required for further recognition of their secondary education in the Czech Republic in order to be enrolled.

Every applicant must successfully pass the entrance examination (see information below).

Entrance examination requirements

The students are accepted on the basis of a written entrance examination consisting of three separate tests in the following subjects: Chemistry, Biology, Physics or Mathematics. Each test contains 40 multiple choice questions with five possible answers out of which only one answer is correct.

Each test takes 60 minutes. No periodic tables or other reference materials are necessary, apart from a simple calculator.

The acceptance pass mark in General Medicine is 60%.

The acceptance pass mark in Dentistry is 65%.

Entrance examination terms

There are two possibilities to sit the entrance examination for Medical Faculty, the first one is held directly in Brno on 19th May, 2012 and the second is held in UK at Medsim workshop (7-9th July, 2012) http://www.workshop-uk.net/medsim.

The deadline for submitting e-applications is scheduled for 30th April, 2012.

E-application

Applicants must apply on-line via an e-application to be found on our web site Electronic Applications for Studies (open from 2012/05/02 to 2012/08/31).

In the e-application, applicants will see all information on:

·  submission of the e-application

·  e-application acceptance confirmation

·  e-application fee (CZK1,300.00) payment confirmation

·  the decision on acceptance or non-acceptance to study

Conditions of study

Recognition of previous university study

All applicants must sit for and pass the entrance exam. No exceptions are granted.

If successful in the entrance examination, applicants are required to submit an official transcript of records and detailed syllabi of courses (in English). Based on these documents, some courses, years of study (of up to a maximum of 2 years’ duration) might be recognised, i.e. students might be accepted and enrolled in the 3rd year (but no higher) of a course of study.

Enrolment

Enrolment for the academic year 2012/2013 will take place in September 2012 during the week prior to the beginning of the autumn semester. The dates will be announced in the Letters of Acceptance, which will be posted to students.

Visas/Temporary stay permission/Permit de sojourn

All non-EU citizens who come to study in the Czech Republic are obliged to get a visa prior to entry into the country. Non-EU applicants are therefore obliged to apply for visas as soon as possible at Czech Embassies. It is recommended to do so well in advance, as the visa process takes about three months.

Students are obliged to present a health travel insurance plan purchased from a Czech insurance company. This insurance must cover the dates indicated on the visa sticker. Make sure the period of purchased cover is not shorter than that indicated on the visa sticker in your passport. Students should present their contract with the Czech insurance company, plus confirmation of insurance payment at the time of their check-in as foreigners with the Czech police (within 3 working days after arrival in the Czech Republic).

Cost of living and accommodation

Foreign citizens have to support themselves fully, including full tuition fees, books, accommodation and meals.

Foreign citizens may be eligible for an accommodation scholarship granted by Masaryk University.

3 Meals a day in an academic refectory cost around EUR 8.00 per day.

A 3-month ticket for public transport costs EUR 26.00.

How to access Brno

Direct flights to the airport in Brno are limited to Ryanair, www.ryanair.com. Other flights: Czech Airlines, www.csa.cz or any other flight companies to Prague or Vienna (Austria), with the following coach/train transfers to Brno.
