Beginning Auditor Tools and Techniques
The Alaska Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors is proud to present athree-day seminar on Beginning Auditor Tools and Techniques.To become a successful auditor, a strong base of knowledge and an understanding of basic audit skills are essential. With this program, new auditors, as well as non-auditors with internal control responsibilities, can learn the ins-and-outs of an audit from beginning to end.
Through team exercises, group discussion, and facilitator presentations, attendees will gain a foundation of knowledge that will allow them to prepare properly for and conduct a successful audit, using preliminary surveys and evidence-gathering techniques. A basic understanding of how to identify risks and internal controls in auditing will also be stressed, along with interpersonal and team-building skills.
Course Outline:
Internal Auditing Today
- Define internal auditing.
- Identify the roles of internal auditors.
- Describe the components of the Audit Model.
Risk Assessment and Risk Management
- Identify the components of risk assessment and risk management as they relate to internal auditing.
- Identify the components of the COSO Internal Control Framework.
Audit Planning
- Identify the requirements of annual audit planning.
- Identify the components of an audit project plan.
Interviewing
- Identify the components of interviews.
Process Documentation
- Identify the common forms used during process documentation.
Audit Programs
- Identify the components of audit programs.
Testing
- Identify the methods for obtaining and presenting audit evidence.
Reporting
- Identify the process to report audit findings.
Selling the Results
- Identify the best practices for selling audit results to stakeholders.
INSTRUCTOR: LANCE JOHNSON, CIA, CRMA, CISA, CRISC
Lance Johnson is the Vice President of Internal Audit at Denali Alaskan Federal Credit Union. His experience spans more than 24 years in audit and operations management positions that covered industries such as the semiconductor manufacturing, higher education, building materials wholesale and retail, payment card systems and equipment, and financial services. Lance has established new internal audit and enterprise risk management functions, managed global warehouse, logistics, and supply chain operations, and taught business, accounting, and statistics courses as an adjunct professor.
Lance is a member of The IIA’s Alaska Chapter, is certified in Internal Audit (CIA) and Risk Management Assurance (CRMA). He is also a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA). Lance earned degrees in Accounting from Brigham Young University and International Management from the University of Texas.
On a more personal note, He has traveled to six of the seven continents, lived in Japan and speaks Japanese. Lance currently resides with his family in Anchorage, Alaska. When he can find spare time Lance enjoys woodworking, drawing and experiencing new adventures with his family.
