0900 / ARRIVAL, TEA & COFFEE / Sofya / (Sofya – bring sticky name labels, blu tack, post-it notes)0915-0930 / Intro / Lucy / Powerpoint- telling
Re: A&Os plus timetable for the 2 days
0930-1030 / Game - getting to know each other / All TPDs / Small group work (HDR groups)
Notes: /
- 2 things and a lie
- Introduce the task (5 mins)
- Then 5 mins per person.
1030-1100 / ‘How did I get here?’ / Lucy / Small group work (TPD advisor groups)
Notes: /
- Trainees emailed to bring a picture of their ‘homely place’, or journey or where they have come from. Facilitators bring something too. The purpose of the task is to understand the roots behind people. Perhaps facilitators start; promote discussion. 5 mins/ person?
- Groups are purposefully non-TPD groups in order to get more individuals to mix. We will do this by assigning numbers to individuals and getting together the 1s, 2s, 3s etc.
- Lucy – to send homework instructions to the new trainees (and facilitators) via email.
1100-1115 / TEA & COFFEE
1115-1215 / What Makes A Good GP? / Ramesh & Lucy / Small non-TPD groups (1s, 2s, 3s from above) reformed into large groups.Inductive reasoning method.
Notes:
Instructions: /
- The aim of this session is to help trainees think what it is that makes for a good GP. The session will then show them how all of these things can be categorised into 12 Professional Competencies. Not only does this ‘inductive’ method introduce them to the idea of the 12 PCs but also helps them to see how everything in their training comes back to these 12 PCs (because they define the very nature of being a GP). We need to get them hooked onto the idea of the 12 PCs from an early stage.
- THE TASK: ‘In terms of knowledge, skills & attitudes, what do you think makes a good GP? You can liaise in pairs, trios or in little groups. Please write down the things you come up with onto the post it notes provided but remember – ONE item per post-it note. You have 15 minutes for this task’.
- While this is being done, Ram and Lucy will hang 12 flip charts (one for each PC) around the room with blu tack. Need one extra flip chart that says ‘Miscellaneous’.
- MAPPING: ‘Can each of you pick a handful of your post-it notes. Go around the 13 flip charts and put your post-it note under what you think is the right heading. We’re not going to explain what these PCs mean - you have to think on your own two feet and you can converse with each other. If you still don’t know where to put your post-it note, place it under the Miscellaneous heading. You have 15 minutes for this task. (This should help each individual question themselves as to what the competency means AND become familiar with it).
- THE DISCUSSION: First of all show them how nearly everything can be encapsulated by the 12 PCs and that this is therefore what they are ultimately assessed on; the 12 PCs are the marking sheet! Talk about each PC andencourage interaction: what it means, examples of what people have written and whether it is representative. Stay a little longer on competencies deficient of post-it notes & discuss the ones not mapped. 30 minutes.
1215-1315 / MRCGP, EP, educational programmes on scheme / Clare
(prev. Hasna) / Large group presentation
Some interaction.
Notes: /

1545-1645 / Bringing Your GP Post to Life / Nick
(prev Nick & Hasna) / PowerPoint
Large Group ?level of interaction.
Notes: /
- Basically a session of ‘top tips’ to help trainees get the most out of their GP training posts.
- There is a PowerPoint that holds all this information – Nick to review and decide on educational methodology (i.e. who does what and how).
- May want to email current set of leavers for more top tips.
- Any amendments to PowerPoint – please send to Ramesh.
1645-1700 / Reflection & Evaluation / Lucy / Large group
Notes: /

- What you are looking forward to.
- Use three post it notes (one for each area) and stick it to the wall.
1700 / END OF DAY 1
DAY 2 – FRIDAY
Time
/Session
/Lead
/Educational Methods
0900 / ARRIVAL, TEA & COFFEE / Sofya / (Sofya – bring sticky name labels, blu tack, post-it notes)0900-0930 / Opening exercise / Lucy / Small group work (HDR groups)
Notes: / Building Paper Towers
- Lucy – develop clear instructions.
0930-1015 / The difference between a Hospital Doctor and GP / Ramesh / Large group work
Small group work (HDR groups)
Notes:
Instructions: /
- The aim of this session is to help trainees identify the differences between hospital doctor and GP (i.e. how the two organisations are inherently different). This will help them see what they are aiming for. Trainees at this stage are used to the ‘hospital way’ of thinking – time for a paradigm shift?
- Start with: ‘how many of you think the skills needed to be a GP are the same skills as being a hospital doctor?’ (i.e. a doctor is a doctor)
- Discuss the differences in TPD advisor groups. Come up with a list of differences. (20 mins)
- Discuss in large group. 4 groups (25 mins)
1015-1100 / Bringing Your Hospital Post to Life / Nick
(prev Nick & Hasna) / Large group work
PowerPoint
Notes: /
- Essentially ‘top tips’ for making the most of hospital posts (like getting on with teams, significant events, encouraging ePortfolio use by seniors, assessments, etc.)
- There is a PowerPoint that holds all this information – Nick to review and decide on educational methodology (i.e. who does what and how).
- May want to email current set of leavers for more top tips.
- Integrate with some of the stuff discussed in prior Ram’s session – ‘Differences between hospital doctor and GP).
1100-1130 / TEA & COFFEE
1130-1300 / Reflective Writing
What did you have for Breakfast? / Lucy / Small group work (TPD advisor groups)
Notes:
Instructions: /
- Lucy to develop the session and provide instructions. The purpose of this session is to introduce the skill of reflection and some frameworks like Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle and Kolbs, to illustrate to trainees how powerful (and transformative) learning occurs through proper reflection.
- Copies of each cycle will be made available to each group (Lucy & Sofya)
- Think of the breakfast you had (or did not have) this morning.
- Use a reflective cycle to see what (if anything) you have learnt from it.
- Go through some of their reflective cycles and discuss learning points (and have a laugh at the same time).
- The idea is that you can reflect on anything (even breakfast) but that if you follow the cycle properly, you see new insights even in things you didn’t think there was opportunity for learning.
- If time left over - get them to do a good/bad learning experience. And then to write it as an eP entry. Share one or two of them.
1300-1400 / LUNCH
1400-1500 / Don’t be afraid to ask the ST3s / Lucy / Large group (without TPDs present).
Q&A session
Notes: /
- Lucy to introduce then leave the trainees with the ST3s so that they can ask any question they want to and get honest answers.
- Lucy to recruit some ST3s and brief them.
1500-1545 / Q&A Session with the TPDs / Clare / Large group session with all TPDs present
Q&A session
Notes: /
- The purpose of this session is to help settle any remaining fears, concerns and unanswered questions via a firing round of questions to the TPDs
- Clare to simply introduce the session, chair discussions and keep eye on timing.
1545-1600 / TEA & COFFEE
1600-1630 / Extra Info, Handouts & Choice of GP post form. / Nick / Large group
Some 1-1?
Notes: /
- Not sure if Nick still takes into account choice of GP post when doing rotations?
- Nick to pull material together and pass to Sofya to photocopy.
1630-1700 / Reflection & Evaluation / Ram & Clare / Large group
Notes: /
- Ram to run evaluation game (throwing balls)
- Clare to review Evaluation form (available on the website) and Sofya to print enough copies (next year consider Survey Monkey?)
- Nick & Lucy – final closing comments.
1700 / END OF DAY 2/END OF INDUCTION
